The Rebel
Mr. Ghost takes the lead and we follow him. I make sure to keep my distance from the guys as I pick up my phone.
'VIVIENNE, OH MY GOD WHERE ARE YOU-'
'Okay, calm down Vanessa-' I whisper into the speaker.
'YOU WEREN'T PICKING YOUR PHONE UP, I THOUGHT YOU DIED!'
'No, Vee. I'm still alive, don't worry.' She finally calms down.
'Thank God, where are you!?'
I smile. After a brief moment of "girl-talk", I tell her I'm on my way home, leaving out the details of Mr. Ghost and how I'm on my way home with him, which is so ironic since he literally almost killed Flynn tonight.
'Well great, because you have about 30 minutes until your parents wake up and find you gone-'
'Oh FUCK!' I had completely forgotten about that, oh god...
I look up to find all five pairs of eyes on me, I don't recognize the two other guys.
'Everything Okay?' Mr. Ghost asks
'Hey uhm, Vee? I'm gonna call you back once I'm home alright?' I don't give her the chance to argue. I hang up.
'Can we just hurry up?' I blurt out. Everything's getting sort of blurry and all I want to do right now is just lie down in my bed, throw the covers on top of me and shut my eyes. Ghostie seems to get it. He looks down, nods once and sits down on his bike. I take the hint and climb on right after him.
'Silas, hand her a helmet.' The guy to our right hands me a helmet and I put it on. I'm having an oxygen debt, I have no idea how these guys wear these suffocating boxes on their heads all day long. I look at the guys behind us and notice that all of them are wearing the same simple black suits and now covering their faces with these helmets instead of those hideous masks. I wonder what they all look like, especially Mr. Ghost...
Ugh, Snap out of it Vivi... He's a murderer.
After a brief moment, I finally rat out, 'Why don't you guys ever take these masks off? I don't even know what you guys look like...'
'Why, you scared we gonna kidnap you darling?' Xaden asks. My breath hitches.
'No, come on, don't scare the girl.' Silas calmly expresses disapproval.
'Okay but can we pleeeasee take you home with us, I really want to show you my puppy. His name is-'
'Oh for God's sake,' Xaden cuts in Austen's sentence and yet again, they start their bickering.
I notice Mr. Ghost hasn't said a word since I asked this question, so I ask him again.
'It's for keeping our identity hidden,' he says hesitantly after some time.
'And why is that? I won't tell anyone about you if you don't want me to.' I encourage but he scoffs and shakes his head.
'It's not that simple.' He says dryly.
'Okay but can you at least tell me your name?' I ask, desperate for at least some sort of information.
'Just call me Phantom.' He says shortly and starts the engine. All five bikes start zooming into the night. My instinct acts up, and I clutch onto him, burying my face in his back. His back stiffens as I inhale, exhale.
Like any normal person would, duh.
I shouldn't feel safe. I shouldn't feel this calm. Not on the back of a bike with a masked stranger who almost murdered someone. But the truth is, I feel more grounded with him than I ever did at home.
