Since their days in grade school, Huh Yunjin and Kim Chaewon had been inseparable. From sharing crayons in art class to swapping secrets under the shade of the playground tree, they forged a bond that withstood the test of time.
Entering college marked a new chapter in their lives. Yunjin delved into her passion for literature, while Chaewon pursued her studies in business administration. Despite their different paths, their friendship remained the anchor in their ever-changing lives.
One day, as they lounged in Chaewon's cozy dorm room, the topic of relationships surfaced. It was Chaewon who broached the subject, her voice tinged with a hint of longing.
"Do you ever feel like we're missing out on something?" Chaewon asked, her gaze searching Yunjin's face for understanding.
Yunjin tilted her head, considering the question. "Maybe," she admitted with a shrug. "But we have each other, right?"
But as the years passed, Chaewon couldn't shake the feeling of loneliness that gnawed at her heart. Watching Yunjin effortlessly navigate the world of dating while she remained on the sidelines only fueled her insecurities.
Then, one day, it was Chaewon who proposed a solution that would change everything. "Let's fake date," she suggested, her voice surprisingly steady despite the tumult of emotions swirling within her. "It'll be fun, and who knows? We might even learn something about ourselves along the way."
At first, Yunjin was taken aback by the suggestion. "Are you sure?" she asked, her brow furrowing with concern.
Chaewon nodded, her resolve unwavering. "I am. Besides, who better to fake date than my best friend?"
And so, they embarked on their fake relationship, their hearts filled with equal parts excitement and uncertainty.
As their charade unfolded, tensions began to simmer beneath the surface. Chaewon found herself longing for more than just fake affection, her heart aching for a love that was real. Yet, with each passing day, Yunjin remained oblivious to her friend's silent yearning.
Meanwhile, Yunjin reveled in the attention and admiration showered upon them as a couple. She was blind to the subtle shifts in Chaewon's demeanor, too caught up in their make-believe romance to notice the longing glances or the faint tremble in Chaewon's voice whenever their hands brushed.
Enter Nakamura Kazuha, a charming and charismatic girl who caught Yunjin's eye during one of their literature classes. With her easy smile and magnetic personality, she soon became a frequent presence in Yunjin's life, sparking a twinge of jealousy in Chaewon's heart.
As Yunjin and Kazuha spent more time together discussing their favorite books and sharing laughs, Chaewon couldn't help but feel like an outsider looking in. She watched with a heavy heart as Yunjin's attention shifted, her own feelings of longing intensifying with each passing day.
"It's nothing serious, Chaewon," Yunjin reassured her one evening, sensing her friend's unease. "Kazuha is just a friend."
But try as she might, Chaewon couldn't shake the nagging feeling of insecurity that plagued her every thought. With each shared smile and inside joke between Yunjin and Kazuha, Chaewon felt herself drifting further away from the friend she held so dear.
And amidst the tangled web of their fake relationship, Chaewon found herself grappling with a truth she had long denied: her feelings for Yunjin were anything but fake. They burned bright and fierce, a flame that threatened to consume her whole.
As emotions boiled over and tensions mounted, Chaewon made a decision. She couldn't bear to watch Yunjin slip away any longer. Gathering her courage, she approached Yunjin one evening, her heart pounding in her chest.
"I can't do this anymore," Chaewon confessed, her voice trembling with emotion. "I can't pretend that I'm okay with seeing you with someone else." She started to sob. "Fuck, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for getting you in this fake relationship. I w-wanted this."
Yunjin's eyes widened in surprise, finally realizing the depth of Chaewon's feelings. "Chaewon, I didn't realize..." she began, her voice trailing off.
But Chaewon shook her head, her resolve unwavering. "I need to step back," she continued, her voice steady despite the turmoil in her heart. "Go with Kazuha. For both of our sakes."
And with those words, Chaewon turned and walked away, leaving Yunjin to grapple with the realization that perhaps their fake relationship had unearthed something real after all.
In the days that followed, Yunjin found herself consumed by thoughts of Chaewon, her heart heavy with regret. She had never meant to hurt her best friend, yet she couldn't deny the undeniable truth that had been staring her in the face all along.
And as she watched Chaewon slip further and further away, Yunjin vowed to make things right, to chase after the love she had been blind to for so long.
"Chaewon."
A voice lingered behind Chaewon that made her turn around in fright.
"Y-yunjin?"
She stared at Yunjin for a bit in disbelief and confusion on her face.
"I love you, Chaewon. I should've said that before."
"W-what?"
"I know this is so sudden and so out of the blue but Ifreakinglovedyousince1styearhighschoolandIstartedfreakingoutwhenyouaskedmetofakedateyouand—"
"Woah, Yunjin. Chill out." She laughed with a cute smile. 'Oh God, her smile is so pretty.' Yunjin thought.
"I loved you, since 1st year high school and I actually started freaking out when you asked me to fake date you. And with Kazuha... she's just a friend. I swear. But I did think I'd get over you with her. But all I did was think about you. At one point, I thought you were just using me. I was... mad. I regret it. Fuck I regret it so much. I'm sorry."
Yunjin reached out to both of Chaewon's hands, caressing it softly.
"I loved you, and I still love you now. No matter how much.. how much I tried to forget my feelings for you. I-It's okay if you don't want anything more but at least stay as my friend, Chae."
Yunjin looked at Chaewon with longing eyes.
"We can't be friends." Chaewon never looked so serious. She was... dead serious about this.
"Oh." Yunjin sat there, defeated.
"Because I want to be yours, Yun."
For in the end, amidst the tangled web of their fake relationship, Yunjin and Chaewon discovered a love that was anything but pretend, a love that would withstand the test of time and tide, a love that burned bright and true.
"I love you, too."
