Chapter 1: Helping others is unpredictable
The laboratory of the robotics research group.
The bright fluorescent lamp above the workbench reflected on the determined face of the young girl standing before it.
"It's a great success! Junior Sister, let's give it a test. It should be able to move now!" Ding Qiyu inserted the soldering iron back, breathed a sigh of relief, and turned her head to flash a sunny smile at her junior sister, who had been watching as she soldered the circuit board. Her voice, deeper than most girls', was warm and magnetic.
"Is that all?" Junior Sister Liu Qi seemed a little incredulous, hesitantly connected the power and pressed the switch.
The motor started to rotate with a "vroom" sound, and the indicator lights on the control board began to flash. The miniature quadruped robot on the workbench started to operate as expected.
"Wow! Senior Sister Qiyu, you are truly amazing! I asked Senior Brother Qian to help me for a long time, but he couldn't get it done. You solved it so easily in just a few moves." Liu Qi was instantly full of admiration for the senior sister in front of her. Liu Qi was a first-year graduate student who had just joined the laboratory. She had heard from others that there was a senior sister named Ding Qiyu in the research group who had excellent research abilities and was especially kind-hearted. Today completely confirmed the rumors. Senior Sister Qiyu readily agreed to help her, patiently checked the equipment issues, while coaching her on how to troubleshoot, and most importantly, she effortlessly solved the problem that had been bothering her for days!
Ding Qiyu tidied up the workbench, turned back to her and smiled, "Haha, Qian Li must have had his brain turned to mush from being tormented by his thesis. I can understand, I can understand. I just happened to encounter this kind of problem before, that's why it went so smoothly."
"Senior Sister, don't be modest. Oh, how about having a meal together this weekend? After all, you solved a big problem for me. And besides, there are very few girls in our research group, and meeting with Senior Sister feels like being with family!" Liu Qi felt that she had to build a good relationship with this talented and enthusiastic senior sister.
"Well... let's stay in touch. I might be sent to attend an expo by the boss this weekend." Ding Qiyu felt a little hesitant, but she saw the disappointed look on her junior sister's face and added, "If I have time, I'll definitely get in touch with you."
Liu Qi happily agreed and left with her miniature quadruped robot. Ding Qiyu looked at her watch, it was a little after two in the afternoon. Because of the sudden squeaking of her bicycle at noon, she had spent half a day fixing it and didn't go back to take a nap. Shaking her slightly exhausted head, she prepared to go to a nearby store near the college to buy a cup of coffee.
Stepping out of the laboratory building, it was a bright February day with green grass and fluttering birds. Children were running on the lawn outside the college, flying kites, while Yanni's music played in Ding Qiyu's ears. Unconsciously, a smile spread across her face, and her mood was exceptionally cheerful.
Ding Qiyu was a graduate student in the mechanical engineering department of this university, just starting her first year of doctoral studies at the age of 24. This university was one of the top institutions in the country, and its mechanical engineering program was ranked first nationwide, with Ding Qiyu's research group being a leader in the field domestically. Born into an ordinary family, both of her parents were high school teachers, perfectly complementing each other with one teaching mathematics and the other teaching Chinese. Thanks to her parents' financial prudence, their family had a good financial standing. Ding Qiyu had excelled academically from a young age, being a true academic achiever. However, she was not just a bookworm solely focused on studies. Her consistent philosophy was, "When it's time for me to study, I am a hundred percent efficient, and when it's not, I don't want to study for a second." Thus, she was completely dedicated and focused in class, never procrastinating on assignments. At the same time, she didn't hold back in indulging in activities she enjoyed, like novels, animations, games, movies, sports, and social gatherings. As Ding Qiyu herself puts it, "Anything interesting is welcomed."
