...
Lisa had just finished eating pizza and drinking soda, and now lay sprawled on her bed, a pleasant haze of contentment swirling around her. What she really wanted to do, though, was blast some music and let herself drown in the beats—anything to chase away the growing boredom. But before she could, her older sister, Becky, appeared out of nowhere at the doorway.“Hey, ever heard of knocking?” Lisa groaned, her irritation growing the moment she saw Becky standing there with that annoying, superior look on her face.
Becky, unfazed, shot her a smug grin. “Your door was wide open, dummy,” she replied, her voice dripping with the usual big-sister condescension.
Lisa rolled her eyes and silently cursed the universe for making her the odd one out in her family. Becky, with her model-like height, flawless complexion, and a figure straight out of a fashion magazine, embodied everything Lisa wasn’t. Both of her sisters, Becky and Lindsey, looked like they’d stepped off a runway. They had inherited their mother’s extraordinary good looks—the perfect combination of long legs, smooth skin, and striking features. Their mom had been a successful model in her younger years, and though she had now shifted her focus to helping run the family business, her beauty remained undeniable.
Her dad, while successful and well-built, didn’t have the kind of looks her mom had fallen for. But his charm, kindness, and intelligence had been enough to win her over. Lisa, unfortunately, took after her dad. She’d realized this stark contrast between her and her sisters early on. She remembered one particular family reunion when she was thirteen.
An aunt had gushed, “Wow, Lindsey and Becky, you two are gorgeous!” and then turned to Lisa with a far less enthusiastic smile. “Oh, Lisa...you’re getting older.” It stung. That was the day Lisa became fully aware of the hierarchy of beauty within her family. Her sisters were the golden standard, and she—well, she was just Lisa.
But despite that, Lisa had one thing her sisters didn’t: a voice. She had a talent for singing that she knew could turn heads, but she was too shy to let anyone besides her parents hear it. At seventeen, Lisa had come to terms with her place in the world—at least, she thought she had.
“Mom says you should come downstairs,” Becky’s voice snapped her back to reality. “Apparently, we’re having a guest.”
“What guest?” Lisa asked, barely suppressing her groan as Becky left the room without further explanation.
Lisa took her time getting up, her mind wandering to who this “guest” could be. Finally, she trudged downstairs to the living room, where her two sisters sat next to their mom on the couch. Lisa quickly noticed her dad was missing.
“Mom, what’s going on?” Lisa asked, a little irritated. She wasn’t in the mood for surprises.
Her mother, looking as graceful as always, smiled warmly. “Your father’s friend Richard’s son, Jacob, will be staying with us for a while.”
The room went silent. Lindsey, the eldest and most sophisticated of the three sisters, was the first to break it. “Who? Why?” she asked, her tone sharp and a little incredulous.
“Well, Richard and his wife are going to be traveling for a year, and they asked if Jacob could stay with us while they’re away. He’ll be part of the family for a while,” her mom explained with a soft smile, clearly excited about the arrangement.
“A *year*?” Becky chimed in, her eyes widening with disbelief. “And we’re just hearing about this now?”
Lisa stifled a laugh as her sisters reacted, clearly upset about their disrupted routine. She didn’t care much. She wasn’t the social butterfly of the house, so as long as the guest wasn’t in her room or invading her personal space, she could tolerate it.
“Why don’t you tell us these things beforehand, Mom?” Lindsey’s tone was sharp, the polished façade she usually held cracking.
Their mom sighed, brushing aside the complaint. “You’ll like Jacob, girls. He’s a sweet boy. He’ll fit in just fine.”
At that moment, the doorbell rang, cutting through the tension.
“Oh, great! The mystery boy has arrived,” Lisa muttered sarcastically, earning glares from both of her sisters.
Their mom got up to answer the door, while Lindsey and Becky stayed glued to the couch, exchanging dramatic glances. After a moment, Lisa said, “Come on, drama queens, let’s go meet the guy.”
With reluctance, they followed her to the foyer, where they could hear their mom greeting the guest.
Standing just outside the door was their father, and next to him, the mysterious Jacob. When Lisa finally saw him, her breath hitched.
Jacob was tall, lean yet muscular, with perfectly chiseled features that looked like they belonged in a magazine. His dark hair was styled effortlessly, and his eyes—deep and intense—captivated her from the moment they met hers. His gaze was sharp, almost calculating, as if he could see right through her.
Her father introduced them one by one. “Jacob, these are my daughters: Lindsey, Becky, and the youngest, Lisa.”
Jacob smiled, a perfect, dazzling smile that could melt anyone’s heart—anyone except Lisa, it seemed. When it came time to greet her, his smile faded, replaced by a distant, almost indifferent expression. It was subtle, but she caught it. It was like he was dismissing her without a word, and the sting of it surprised her.
For a brief second, she felt like a plain background in the presence of her sisters—snails amidst butterflies.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, ladies,” Jacob said smoothly, but his eyes were locked on Lindsey, who gave him an equally charming smile.
Lisa’s stomach twisted with a strange sense of disappointment. He had barely looked at her, and when he did, it was as though she wasn’t worth the time.
“Come on inside, Jacob,” her mom said, breaking the tension. “Let’s get you settled in.”
As they moved back into the house, Lisa hung behind, watching as Jacob charmed her parents and sisters effortlessly. He moved with a certain confidence, like he knew exactly the effect he had on people.
As she stood there, Lisa couldn’t shake the feeling that this boy wasn’t just any ordinary house guest. Something about him felt different—dangerous even. And though she wouldn’t admit it, the idea of spending the next year under the same roof as him sent a ripple of nervous excitement through her.
The thought of what lay ahead stirred in her mind.
