«It's okay, it's okay, you're safe. You're safe now». He's holding his head with shaky and bloodied hands. His sticky fingers caress his nape, sticking them into the tangle of dark hair. His usually silky hair is now covered in blood and sweat. His grip tightens on those same strands, as if to bring him closer-to make sure he stays close to him.
«You, you don't know that...» he chokes out. Spit and blood land on his bottom lip and chin.
«I know you. And I know you won't leave this world without putting up a fight first». He's pressing one of his cheeks to his chest now.
«I-I don't know if, if I have any of that, any of that left in me, old man». One of his hands goes up to his mentor's chest, feeling his heartbeat kick into madness. «And by the look of it, you-you don't seem so sure either...»
He doesn't reply. Not to deny nor confirm his words, but they both know. They know this is their last rodeo. May as well make it serve a purpose and come clean to each other. Once and for all.
He tenderly caressed his cheek for the last time. The dirt and sweat and blood on Kyouya's face mix with the drying blood and dirt on his fingers. His big hands, hands that proved to be able to inflict pain but also teach love (how to love, even), held a young face close to his own. Honey-colored eyes and cyan ones lock into one another, communicating without needing words to come out of their mouths. His lips touch his forehead, a tear escapes his eye, but he pretends his pupil can't see it happening-except he can. A string pulls at his heart, if out of physical pain or because of the realization that that's the first time Kyouya has witnessed Dino Cavallone cry in front of him. He couldn't be sure.
And now, his eyes too are completely filled with tears that blur his vision and make his Adam's apple bob once, then twice.
«Fuck... Cavallone...» he tries.
«Kyouya?» Dino responds, as if called to attention by his long-standing pupil. Except he was no longer standing, his fiery and icy presence was no longer holding him up by sheer force of will.
Kyouya was leaving, forever, he was leaving him forever-and that felt wrong. It's wrong that Kyouya is the first one of the two of them to leave this world. The thought alone made his skin crawl.
Dino has always thought Kyouya would outlive him by decades, not die before he could even reach his midlife period.
«Wha-What are you waiting for? A formal invite? Kiss me, Cavallone».
And that's exactly what Dino Cavallone did.
Once more.
One last time.
