"December 15th, year 1978
Dear diary, Another 27 inches of snow had fallen today. I didn't have any way to get to school, and a natural disaster was declared. If that wasn't enough, I got into an argument with my father because of Mary again. Sometimes I want to hang myself, but people like her aren't worth it. The only good thing about this situation is that I can hang out with my friends in our Snow Fort. I hope-"
- Zofia get your ass over here!!
- Coming!! - She responded to her stepmother and thought,
*I wonder what this twat needs me for now.*
Zofia came out of her room upstairs, and walked down the stairs into the kitchen, where her stepmom called her from.
- Yes, what do you want? - She asked with a hint of irritation in her voice.
- Don't talk to me like that, you brat. Move and clean up. Look at all this filth. - She said scornfully.
- And what are you here for? I'm not the only one wh-
She didn't even finish her sentence when she felt a sudden pain on her cheek.
- Don't you dare talk back to me. I'm your step mother, you will do as I say! - She shouted straight into Zofia's face. She walked out of the kitchen leaving Zofia with a mess to clean up, and a deepening feeling of hatred.
After Zofia's father returned home, she tried telling him everything again, but he wouldn't listen to her. Tired after a whole day of work, he fell asleep sitting in his armchair infront of the TV screen.
The next day, Zofia tried explaining to her dad everything that happened when he was at work the day before all over again, but Max had enough of listening to all of her "lies".
Some day during another argument.
- Why are you believing her and not me? I'm your daughter, this should mean something to you! - Sofia screamed with her eyes laced with tears, to which her father answered.
- The fact that you're my daughter doesn't justify you saying all those things about your stepmom. She's only trying to replace your mother, and all you do is try to slander her.
- I cook for you, I clean, I do all of your laundry... Have you ever cared at all? - Maria chimed in with a fake hint of sadness in her voice. Her hand wrapped around Max's. They stood there like that for a couple seconds. Zofia saw a malicious smirk spread across her stepmother's face. Before Zofia could think of a response, her dad started shouting at her again.
- See? I told you. Maria's trying her hardest and you don't give a shit!
Zofia bolted up from her chair and hit the table with her fist as hard as she could, screaming into her father's face. - BUT SHE ISN'T MY MOTHER! Can't you see how she's manipulating you?! She wants you to hate me. I'm sure she planned it all.
After a moment of tense silence, Max ordered Zofia to go back to her room, and that she can only come out when she thinks her behaviour through.
Who knows, maybe her words have planted a seed of truth in her dad's consciousness, but a long time must pass for him to understand his mistake...
The next day Zofia woke up to a knocking noise coming from her window. She scrambled out of bed and looked out the window with her eyelids still heavy. It was her best friend Christopher. When she opened her window, a snowball hit her face.
- Sorry! Do you want to hang out today? You have to help us finally dig the fort out and make a wall around it. - Chris spoke energetically while forming another snowball.
- I can't. My father grounded me again...
- Can't you sneak out? Your dad isn't home anyway, and you stepmom doesn't even care. - Chris said aiming at a tree.
- How am I supposed to sneak out when she's sitting in the living room? She will see me.
- She won't if you get out through the window. - Christopher stated, proudly.
After a moment of thinking Zofia nodded at his idea. She went to dress up, then she hurried back and sat on the windowsill before jumping out the window right into a pile of snow.
- Are you alright? - Chris asked with a hint of concern.
- I'm okay. But I didn't expect to fall in this deep. - Zofia replied while struggling to crawl out of the giant snow pile. Christopher laughed and reached his hand out in his friend's way.
- Need help?
Zofia smiled at Chris and she let him pull her up. Once she was on her feet, they started heading to to the forest where they had their fort. The rest of their group was already waiting there. Bianca and Adam were digging the fort out. When they noticed Zofia and Christopher walking their way, they immediately ran up to them for a group hug and just like that the four of them dove into deep snow.
Days would pass, and Zofia started losing her hope that her dad would ever believe her, so she finally stopped bugging him. When Maria realised that Zofia isn't whining to her dad anymore, she decided to use it against her and start lying to him about Zofia.
One day Maria broke an expensive vase, and put the blame on Zofia. A couple days later she was on a walk with Patches, Zofia's dog, and she lost him in the woods. And of course, again, blamed Zofia for it. After several such affairs, Max couldn't stand it anymore.
- What is wrong with you? When you're not talking crap about Maria, you start breaking our precious family souvenirs.
- But I didn't do anything. - Zofia said, and before she could add anything else to defend her own image, her dad chimed in.
- I'm done with this. You're an irredeemable piece of shit. And I thought I raised you well. You leave me with no choice.
- W-what do you mean, dad? - Zofia muttered, scared, and unsure of what is about to happen.End of chapter 1.
