Chapter33: Shadows of the Heart.
The days following Aurora's birth had been a mixture of joy and challenge. While Aiden reveled in the role of a new father, Eliana found herself struggling with feelings she couldn't quite explain. The once vibrant and cheerful Eliana was now often lost in a fog of sadness and exhaustion.
Aiden tried his best to support her, taking on most of the responsibilities for baby Aurora, whom they lovingly nicknamed Ari. He knew Eliana was going through something difficult, but he couldn't fully understand the depth of her struggle.
One crisp autumn morning, Aiden's parents arrived for a visit. His father, Thomas, and his mother, Catherine, had traveled from their countryside home to meet their grandchild. Aiden welcomed them warmly, eager to share his new life with them.
"Mother, Father, this is Ari," Aiden said, beaming with pride as he held his daughter. "Isn't she perfect?"
Thomas smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "She's beautiful, Aiden. Just like her mother."
Catherine, however, seemed less impressed. She glanced around the house, her sharp eyes taking in every detail. "And where is Eliana?" she asked, a hint of disapproval in her tone.
"She's resting upstairs," Aiden replied, his smile fading slightly. "She's been feeling a bit overwhelmed since the birth."
Catherine pursed her lips. "A mother's duty is to her child, Aiden. She should be taking care of her, not resting."
Aiden's heart sank at his mother's harsh words, but he forced a smile. "She's doing her best, Mother. It's been hard for her."
Catherine huffed but said nothing more. As the day went on, she found subtle ways to criticize Eliana, often when Aiden was out of earshot.
"You should be with your baby," Catherine said to Eliana one afternoon, her tone icy. "A mother who neglects her duties is no mother at all."
Eliana, already fragile, felt the sting of Catherine's words deeply. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she said nothing, too exhausted and heartbroken to fight back.
Aiden, unaware of his mother's cruel remarks, continued to care for Ari with all the love he could muster. He often found Eliana sitting by herself, staring out the window with a vacant expression.
"Elly," he said softly one evening, sitting beside her. "Talk to me. What's going on?"
Eliana shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I feel... I feel like I'm failing, Aiden. I can't do this."
Aiden pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. "You're not failing, Elly. You're going through something really tough, but we'll get through it together. You and me, okay?"
Eliana nodded, but the weight of her depression felt insurmountable. She wanted to believe Aiden, but the darkness inside her seemed too powerful to overcome.
As the days passed, Aiden became more aware of his mother's harsh treatment of Eliana. One afternoon, he overheard a particularly cruel remark.
"You are not fit to be a mother," Catherine snapped. "Look at you, wallowing in self-pity while your child needs you."
Aiden's blood boiled. He stepped into the room, his eyes blazing. "That's enough, Mother."
Catherine looked taken aback. "Aiden, I'm just saying what needs to be said."
"No, you're being cruel," Aiden shot back. "Eliana is doing her best, and she needs our support, not your judgment."
Thomas stepped in, placing a hand on Catherine's arm. "Catherine, we need to go."
Catherine glared at Aiden but said nothing more. As she and Thomas left, Aiden turned to Eliana, who was sobbing quietly.
"I'm so sorry, Elly," he whispered, pulling her into his arms. "I didn't realize how bad it was. I'm here for you. We'll get through this."
Eliana clung to him, her heart aching but a tiny spark of hope igniting within her. With Aiden by her side, maybe, just maybe, she could find her way back to the light.
The road ahead would be difficult, but together, they would face it, one step at a time, their love and the strength of their family guiding them through the shadows.
