Rydel's POV:

~Flashback~

"Promise me you'll keep in touch," I said as Ellington pulled me into a hug.

"I promise," he whispered in my ear. With his strong arms around me and the familiar scent of his cologne on his collar, I didn't want this hug to end. I didn't want today to end.

It was the last day that I would see him for a while. The band had had a good run. But after 4 successful albums and nearly 10 years of us being together, it was time to move on with our lives. We were all in our mid-20's, and as much as we loved performing, it was time for us to see what else was out there.

I was going back to work at the Rage as a choreographer and Ellington was headed back home to Wisconsin, where his family was. My brothers were doing new things too-taking acting jobs, playing hockey, and Riker even took up dancing. Although my brothers and I still live in an apartment together, I wouldn't be seeing them nearly as much as I used to. And I wouldn't be seeing Ellington at all.

I was the one to finally pull away, breaking the hug. I knew that if I let it go any longer, I might break down and start crying. He was my best friend, but I had to say goodbye at some point.

"Friends for life?" He asked as he held out his hand.

"Absolutely." I took his outstretched hand in mine and we did our secret handshake one last time. His hand felt rough and calloused from all the years of playing drums, but it was warm and familiar at the same time-a feeling that I wouldn't know for a while.

"See you soon," he waved as he backed away, then finally turned and got in his car.

"See you soon," I repeated to myself, even though I had no idea when soon was. I watched the taillights grow more distant as his car reached the end of my street.

~3 years later~

It felt so good to be back with the whole group again. Ellington had been on a road trip for the past couple weeks, so we told him he had to stop by California and stay with us for a day. We were all so eager to be back together again that we spent the whole day together. We went to the beach, walked around town, and went to our favorite hangout spots.

It was a great day and it felt like we picked up right where we left off. We were all just 3 years older. But other than that, it seemed like nothing had changed.

The day slowly came to a close. We watched the sun set then walked back to our house as the darkness settled in and the city lights began to flicker on.

"You guys want to watch a movie?" Ross asked as we approached the front porch. My brothers agreed, but I didn't feel up to it.

"I think I'm gonna stay out here for a while," I said, turning and walking back towards the sidewalk.

"Yeah, I think I will too," Ellington followed after me.

"Alright, see you guys later," Riker called as he closed the door behind them.

I smiled at Ellington as we silently strolled to where his car was parked outside the house. We sat in the grass in front of the car.

Ellington leaned up against a tree and looked up at the sky. "Nice day, huh?"

"Yeah," I pulled at the grass subconsciously. "It's really great having you back and all of us together."

"Yeah," he smiled, "just like old times."
