Prologue
Emma found solace in her room, the one place where she could unreservedly express her emotions without fear of judgment. Her bed and pillow were steadfast companions, silently absorbing her thoughts as she grappled with overthinking that often led her down memory lane. Happiness felt elusive; while she had fleeting joyful moments, she never experienced a sustained phase of contentment. School was a battleground of insecurities, where she struggled with her self-image and often found her smile the only thing she cherished—though even that was mocked by some.
The pain of losing her father shattered her world, leaving her to navigate life filled with guilt, as if she had failed to save him. Dreams of him haunted her, and the subsequent loss of her grandmother only deepened her sorrow. With both of them gone, her focus shifted entirely to making her mother and sister happy, leading her to forsake her dream of becoming a doctor to pursue engineering instead. As the eldest, she felt the weight of responsibility to provide for her family.
Just as she was lost in her thoughts, a knock interrupted her reverie. It was her mother, radiating a smile that sparked curiosity. When asked about it, her mother urged her to join her in the living room, where Emma found her uncle and aunt seated, their expressions revealing a tension that mirrored her confusion. Without hesitation, her uncle dropped a bombshell: “Emma, you got a marriage proposal from a family, and we are considering it.” Stunned, Emma's mind raced, the unexpected twist pulling her from the depths of her reflections into a future she hadn’t anticipated.
