Chapter 1

Riker POV

"If he doesn't remember, don't show him pictures from the accident. It could trigger traumatic memories for him. We want to keep him as calm as possible."

Who's talking? I don't recognize that voice. Why are there tons of beeping sounds? And why does my back and neck hurt so bad?

I opened my eyes and instantly started freaking out and crying. I don't know what's going on. I don't know where I am. Well I know I'm in a hospital, but I don't know why.

"Riker, calm down. You need to stay still. You're ok. Just breathe," dad said, appearing by my side.

"W-what's going on!?" I asked.

I looked down and saw a cast on one of my legs and my ankle on my other foot was wrapped up as if I'd sprained it. And there was a needle in my arm, probably giving me some sort of medicine or something.

"What's going on!?" I asked again, more panicky this time.

"Riker, I need you to stay calm," dad said.

"I'll stay calm if you tell me what's happening!"

"You were in a car accident."

"What!? I don't remember being in an accident. Actually I don't... remember this morning either... Or yesterday... Or..."

"Your memory might be a bit fuzzy for a little while. It's ok. You hit your head pretty hard."

"Wait. What happened? Why am I in the hospital? What's wrong with me?"

"Riker-"

"My back hurts. And my neck. And what happened to my legs? Wait. Why can't I feel my legs!? Why can't I move them!? Dad-"

"Riker, you need to calm down. You're going to hurt yourself."

"I'm already hurt!" I said, starting to cry really hard.

A nurse came over and put something in my IV. And I started feeling super sleepy. I guess she didn't like all my panicking.

"Tell me what's going on," I said, closing my eyes.

"You were in a car accident."

"You already said that. What's wrong with my legs?"

"Riker, can you stay calm?"

"I'm tired."

"Ok, I need you to not freak out and move around. Otherwise you could make everything 10 times worse. Can you promise me you'll stay still?"

"I promise," I mumbled, feeling really tired.

"You know how your back and neck hurts?"

"Mhmmm..."

"You injured your spinal cord in the crash. You fractured one of your legs and fractured your ankle. The good news is that you shouldn't feel any pain from those. The bad news is that you aren't able to move your legs."

"Ever?" I asked, starting to cry a bit harder again.

"Well... We don't know. There's a lot of swelling in your back right now. The doctors believe there's a chance you might regain feeling in your legs as the swelling goes down and stops pressing on your spinal cord. It might take a while to regain feeling and you might need to relearn how to walk. Worst case scenario is that you don't regain feeling and your legs stay paralyzed."
