Derek was an ordinary person with ordinary tastes. He liked music, hanging out with friends, but most of all, he loved anime.
All sorts of anime, from Death Note, to Elfen Lied to Inu-Yasha. All anime and manga, new and old, trending and lesser-known. He was truly fascinated by it all.
One day in July, his girlfriend Shelly decided to come over to his house and watch a new anime she had found at the store. She was very excited and said it was the only one in stock.
Derek, loving the idea, agreed to her plans. And so it was settled. Shelly was ecstatic, and promptly squealed with glee as he said his words of agreement.
On Thursday night, Shelly showed up at his front doorstep, carrying her bag that contained the new anime as well as other things. She practically bounced into the front room as Derek invited her inside.
"I'm so-o-o-o excited to see this! I've never watched this anime before! Won't this be fun?" Shelly said gleefully, her eyes gleaming.
"Yeah! This's gonna be awesome! Where's the DVD?" Derek asked.
"Oh, it's in my bag," she said, rummaging through it. She finally found the case containing the disk.
"Found it!" Shelly cried.Shelly then removed her shoes and followed Derek into his computer room, where they pulled up the chairs from the nearby desk. They rolled the chairs over to the computer where Derek eagerly turned his computer on and opened the case to get the disk out.
Almost instantly, the room went absolutely silent. A silence that they could feel creeping up their bodies and taste in their throats. Even the computer screen seemed to darken before their eyes. And the DVD also had a weird name: THE OPENING OF THE GATE.
Derek tentatively slid the disk into the drive. Windows Media Player opened and he hit play...
...but they were not prepared for what played on the screen.
An image of a skull with black eyes, and seemingly smiling eerily at them flickered on the screen for about three seconds. Then, static played and an image of a man was displayed. The man was truly a gruesome sight: his eyes, missing balls with black goo running down them. His mouth, wide and also blackened and seemingly melting. His hair was long, stringy and black. He was surrounded by a deep red sky and an ashen, gray field. All this with the addition of ominous, creepy music that grew steadily more intense. Then, more static, but no white noise effect. Just music, eerily growing more and more suspenseful.
As the static ended, there could only just be heard a flicker of a laugh if you listened really hard- a thick, evil, menacing laugh that echoed quietly for only a second. Then, the image of Hell was displayed, with a thick, black iron gate sitting right before them. With 5.1 surround sound and 1080p resolution, the mist that floated over the gate seemed to beckon them, as if inviting them to open the gates of Hell with only their hands...
Shelly was white with fright. Derek's eyes were seemingly glued to the screen. Both were trembling horribly, but Shelly noticed Derek leaning forward a little more by the second. It was not much, a mere centimeter at the most. But she knew.
She had to shut the computer off.
Derek, however, was not interested in the idea in the slightest. He just kept gawking at the disturbing sight before him, not daring to take his eyes off the image.
Then, it spoke.
"I've been waiting for you."
"Derek," Shelly asked, her voice shaky, "what was that?"
No reply.
Just music, hanging in the air like the foul stench of a rotting corpse when it starts to decay.
And Derek, inching ever so close to the screen.
"Come with me. Join the party of the Underworld."
"Stop this! Who are you anyway??" Shelly shouted at the screen.
"I'll give you ten seconds."
"TEN"
Shelly started to shake more violently. She turned her face towards the panic-stricken Derek inching closer and closer to the monitor with each second.
"NINE"
Shelly tried to pull Derek away from his computer, but he would not budge. She pushed and pulled and shoved and yanked, but he was stuck in his seat.
"EIGHT"
Shelly tried shutting down the computer, but to no avail. She even held the power button in on the console for ten seconds, but still no luck.
"SEVEN"
"Derek!!" Shelly frantically yelled to get his attention. "Snap out of it!!"
But he did not. He still inched closer with every second that went by, as if he were hypnotized.
"SIX"
Shelly tried everything at this point: ejecting the disk, turning off the monitor, ending the program, but nothing worked. Panicked, she slammed away at buttons on the keyboard.
"FIVE"
Derek was almost touching the computer screen, and Shelly frantically tried to pull him away. She was so close to losing her knight in shining armor, and she could see a shadowy figure seemingly reaching out to them from the monitor...
"FOUR"
The couple were in shock, Derek nearing the monitor more and more, and Shelly trying to pry him away from the hellish scene before them.
"THREE"
Shelly shrieked as the figure showed its face, recognizing him instantly. The sight made her try to heave Derek out of his seat even more than before.
"TWO"
Derek was now trying to pull himself away, but found himself unable to move at all. He yelled at Shelly to help him, with her responding that she was trying her hardest.
"ONE"
Shelly seemed to slacken in her attempt to pry Derek away and instead seemed to cling to him for dear life. All Derek could do was move toward the monitor and allow himself and his love to touch the screen...
"ZERO"
A hot wind blew through the office. All that remained of the couple were two bleached white skulls inside a pentagram drawn with their own blood, and the gate on the screen opened, and the menacing laugh echoing through the house...
