Baxter's smile could have lit up a city, so I guessed correctly since it would have been embarrassing if I had been wrong.
"Yes, I'm your mate." Baxter grabbed my hands, directing me to look only at him. But I saw McCoy and Monroe trying to escape discreetly out of my eye. But I wasn't ready to let them escape. I felt like I did as a child on the rides with big drops; I was not necessarily sick but brimming with excitement. I felt a million questions rising about wolves, witches, and other creatures. I wanted to know about mates and becoming a wolf, and I simply could not let the fountain of information that was Roe leave just yet.
"What is a witch," I asked.
"Oh," she paused as she attempted to leave. "I am like a human, but I can change the physical world through the energy of magic."
"so witches and wolves are friends?"
"umm," she looked at McCoy before answering,
"some are friends with wolves, others are not. Each of us is an individual and makes decisions like that on our own."
"Is there a magical society that runs the magical world or the real world? Are you all a part of the Illuminati"
"Well, we are all normally aware of the other creatures, and a council of magical creatures is designed to keep the peace."
"what are the other magical creatures."
"There are so many I couldn't possibly list them all." Roe looked at Baxter helplessly.
"do you have any questions about shifters?" He cut into my rapid-fire questioning.
"Will it hurt?" That was a slow question, and I didn't look at anyone when I asked it. I didn't want them to think I would back out just because of something like that, not that I had decided to be turned into a shifter.
"yes," Roe answered when I was starting to think no one would
"a lot" was McCoy's addition to that statement.
"Why does it hurt," I asked. If they have magic, why couldn't they take the pain away?
"magic can't fix everything, and some things must be lived through. If you are to be truly accepted by the wolves, you need to survive a shift on your own. Besides, if I were to take your pain away, you would not be mentally present to meet your wolf spirit, and that can end badly with the wolf spirit taking control and not relinquishing it." Roe explained
"When we shift, every bone in our body breaks and reforms into that of our wolf form. Our skin sprouts fur and our eyes change. The stronger you are, the younger you do this. I was under ten when I shifted, meaning I was strong, not just my wolf from the person. The shifter community respects strength. If you were to take your pain away with magic, the pack wouldn't respect you," McCoy added gently.
"But before you get to that shift, Roe will help you with potions to assist in the transition, and we will put you in a pre-shift training program," Baxter added.
"you will be exercising with a bunch of teens and kids. How cute," Roe coughed to cover her laugh.
"You should do it too, and I suggest putting them in the omega training since it is designed for adults," McCoy added.
"I can protect myself with magic," she pouted at him
"That is a good suggestion."Baxter nodded in approval
"Well, don't leave out the important part of the training," Roe rose with excitement, staring McCoy down.
"for her and myself to be able to do this training properly, we need to live on pack grounds, which means that by demanding that we do this you are both asking us to move in."
"I'm doing no such thing, and you are not welcome to move into my rooms," McCoy huffed. "you are a witch. You can shadow step from one place to another with a thought, so there is no need for anything like that."
"You think you can demand that I do things like this training and, simultaneously, be so disgusted at the thought of me moving in?"
"I will not have a witch as my female. if you move in that would give off the wrong impression," McCoy responded to her cooly.
"We wouldn't want them to figure out what we were just doing upstairs, now would we?" Her tone attempted to be joking, but there was a pain in her voice.
"There is a difference in a round or two with you for pleasure and a permanent bond." McCoy might have had more to say, but her hand smacked his face before she stormed out that he did not need to continue speaking.
"you should go after her and apologize," Baxter told him.
"I will not have a witch as a mate," McCoy stormed off like Roe, illustrating how good of a match they were.
"what was that all about? I thought mates were naturally drawn to each other," I asked.
"They are, but those two have emotional roadblocks on both sides that keep them from acting as mates should. But I wouldn't worry; mates always find a way in the end," Baxter stated.
"I guess"
