Andy Dufresne, although having a perfectly planned strategy for escaping and making a whole new identity as Randell Stephens, was not as strategic as he hoped. The re-occurring thoughts of what could have been done better. The loose ends left behind in his escape. Only more clues left for the police. They drove him insane. It wasn't all downhill from the moment he escaped though. His plans did go through. He went to Mexico, before settling down in Zihuatanejo, where he met Ellis "Red" Redding again.
