Chapter 1 (900ish wc)

Biana Vacker grabbed her airpods out of her purple-studded backpack and let her head lean back against the window.
It was Thursday. The longest day of the week.
The day would be packed with class after class with only a 45 minute study hall and a short lunch break in the library after tutoring. And that's if she was lucky.
After that she would grab a bite from the deli shop on the way to dance and probably get back in time to cram for the following day.
She breathed a barely-there sigh, hoping not to draw any attention to herself and risk any questions from her mother, who had very much insisted on driving her to school. It wasn't a bad thing per se, but she was 16. With a licence as of two months ago. She had been behind the wheel for two years. But it was really okay. She didn't mind it if only to put her mother at ease.

...

She was templating her notebook in the few minutes before her chemistry class would begin, when she felt the calming presence of her desk mate settle in beside her.
She had known Tam Song for most of her life, them being in the same grade and going to the same schools and all. But it wasn't until high school that they had really connected.
He was quiet beside her, as he took out his books, one by one, and set them on the table.
He crossed his arms on top of his books and turned to look at her as he usually did.

"Morning, B" he said, barely above a whisper. His sleek black hair hung in front of his eyes, the tips of it greyish white as though dipped in silver.

"It's past three in the afternoon Tam."

He gave her a sleepy smile and straightened as he shuffled through his backpack to take out what was undeniably the same cinnamon gum he had chewed since the day they met.
He offered some to her, and she denied as she usually did.
It was only the rare occasion that she would except him, she could barely tolerate the stuff. It burned her mouth like no one's business, but she had been known to take some if only to be polite.

They got through chemistry with little communication as the teacher was fairly strict in that regard, and headed off to study hall.

"So I started reading the book you got me the other day." He said as they started down the noisy hall.

She pirked up at that.

"Really? I thought you said you don't read books.” She said only a little smugly. He rolled his eyes a little but the crack of a smile stood in his eyes accompanying the motion.

"Well last night I did. It basically glared at me through my backpack until I finally picked it up. You cursed it."

She smiled back at that. He was always such an idiot.

"I did not curse it, Tam Song. That's the guilt of you shutting me down so fast when I gave it to you."

"Was it any good?" She asked after his reply seemed to be again, rolling eyes as per usual.

"Idk, I fell asleep after four pages. Barely remember what happened."

"Ha, liar" She might have actually believed him this time if he hadn't straightened his shoulders as if to make himself look more believable.

"Um, I really could have. Maybe I did and now I deserve an apology." He retorted.

"Liar" She sang, poking him in the arm.

"Am not"

"Are too"

"Don't be childish"

"You freaking started it!”

The bell interrupted their bickering.

"Now we're late for study hall. Look what you've done."

Now it was her turn to roll her eyes.

Freaking dork.

...

When Biana got home from dance that night, probably tired enough to fall asleep on the floor, she kindly greeted her parents, noting that since her brother wasn't downstairs, he was probably up in his room.
Her family was very rhythmic in the way they functioned. Always just so and rarely diverting from its regularity. Her mother and father worked at their self made realty company, 22 minutes from their house and eight minutes from her school. They made enough money to build their own house with more rooms than they used, and set up trust funds for their kids for college.

Her older brother, Fitz, was finishing up his senior year of high school at the city's most well known private school, with honours. And while Biana herself had decided against that school, she still attended the much smaller, closer private school. Her grades weren't quite as good as her star-of-a-brother's, and her weakness in all things maths had made it so she was stuck in the regular class with the other nobody's, she had had straight A's all through middle and high school.

And Alvar was… well Alvar was her eldest brother. He was seven years older than her and had, as far as she had been considered, just left. To say less, she and the rest of her surrounding family didn't really communicate much with him.

With a hug to her mother and a kiss on her dad's cheek, she made her way up the steps and into her room where she promptly fell asleep, thoroughly
