Kanoa looked out the window and crossed her arms. Rain fell in dark sheets from the sky, slicking down the road. Night descended over the city. It was a cold evening, and there was a bony chill that pierced the very basis of warmth. Kanoa had a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach, a very bad one indeed. "Mom, I don't think we'll find him."
Her mom sat at the steering wheel, knuckles white and eyes bloodshot. Tears welled in those bloodshot, light blue eyes. "We have to," her mom whispered "No matter what, we have to find him. He can't be out in weather like this."
"Mom, he's left us plenty of times before. He's probably at a bar or something. He'll be home in the morning."
The speed increased gradually. "That's what I'm worried about." Her mom looked around, eyes sweeping the landscape. Her eyes seemed to lock in on one specific space. "Is that... Is that him?" she whispered and picked up speed to catch up to the lone individual. As the car carried them towards the figure, the sky shot at the earth, tearing the gentle fall of rain in a mighty flash. The lightning struck a tree, making it fall across the road.
"Mom!" Kanoa cried. The breaks screeched in protest as if the car did not wish for their survival. "Mom!" Kanoa screamed one last time before the car collided with the massive tree and she was thrown into the dark.
