Cordelia never wanted to transfer. Yet here she sat in the passenger seat of her fathers truck staring out the window staring at nothing but Oregon woods. Cordelia loved her old school: Laguna bay. the brunette thought back to the good memories she had with her friends, a sly smile frosting her face. "Ay look at you happy mi sol" her fathers scratchy voice said. Marco "crazy eyes" colton was one sight to see, he stood at a good 6'0 his toned biceps adorned in tattoos and fish hook scars from long years at sea. The nickname "crazy eyes' ' comes from having one blank eye, nothing in it just an empty white eye. His other eye was a nice hazel Cordelia spent her whole life hearing how much she looked like her father. She never really saw it though.
She sighed, closing her eyes "I'm not happy papi" she responded adjusting the headphone that sat in her ear. Her father stared at the road in front of him silent, a pitiful look on his face "look" he sighed "it's not easy for me either, im sending my only daughter across the country away from the only thing she knows, you think that doesn't scare me?" his words lingering in the air. Cordelia refused to look back at her father, she knew it wasn't easy for him either but her stubbornness was a trait he'd given her anyway "you don't HAVE to send me anywhere" cordelia said. attitude slicing the warm ambiance that once existed within the car. "you know i'm right, i was happy at laguna, we BOTH were"
Laguna bay's school of sirens was all Cordelia knew. a small school with maybe 100-ish kids total all of siren descent. She couldn't understand the move. Her own father loved the water. He was a pirate in his younger days, he settled when he had Cordelia. That's when he found laguna bay it became a home to both.
The ride was pure silence except for the occasional cough or sneeze, cordelia was snoozing off soft snores escaping her nose, her father looked over to her smiling softly. He knew she was just upset it would pass. He hoped. No one knew how to hold a grudge better than Cordelia; he truly hoped that she'd like her new school.
All was quiet on the empty road, all that could be heard were Cordelia's soft snores and the hum of the moving car. Marco took in everything around him, growing up at sea his whole life the woods was like paradise. The complete opposite of everything he knew, the thought of new opportunities for Cordelia made his heart swell. All he ever wanted for his girl was the best, when cordelia's mom passed away he devoted himself to her. He gave up his life as a pirate to take care of Cordelia and show her the world. Marco smiled dwelling on childhood memories, from Cordelia's first steps on the sands of ponce, to her 5th birthday at laguna bay surrounded by people just like her. Marco was one of few humans that wasn't afraid of magic, even when he didn't understand it. He wanted to learn to understand, to help his daughter everything he'd done up until then was for her.
The soft sounds of Cordelia waking up shook Marco out of his thoughts "everything ok?" he asked eyes still on the road "im fine" cordelia responded groggily "im hungry though" she said stretching. "I'm sure i could find us a place to eat" he responded. Cordelia pulled out her phone and began typing away, not paying her father any mind. He sighed knowing the conversation had ended there.
It'd been an hour since cordelia had woken up and her phone was out of service, she huffed putting her hands in her lap looking out the window staring at the water droplets that fell along the glass. She stuck her finger to the glass manipulating the water around her finger making it move in swirls along the window she giggled softly feeling a little better. Cordelia truly flourished around water, even before her siren traits began to show. She'd always been drawn to the water she reminisced on the times she gave her father heart attacks jumping off boats into the water. Cordelia was always a strong swimmer; it was one of the first things that gave away that she'd inherited her mothers siren qualities.
The true confirmation was when she was 5, she'd been laying on the edge of a boat watching her repair something on the side, a harsh wave hit knocking him clean over the edge. Cordelia watched in horror as the waves crashed over her father she let out a screech of horror, and that's when the waves stopped. They slowed in the air and stopped, allowing her father to grab onto the boat pulling himself back on. Cordelia could still remember the feeling of pride she felt that day when she realized water was her strength.
"Still hungry?" Marco asked, gazing over at his daughter. "Mhm" cordelia mumbled not wanting to give in, to what exactly? She didn't know. "I need an answer mi sol, there's a food stop coming up on this exit" he responded smirking he knew she'd give in, she was his daughter after all. Cordelia huffed, adjusting her body to now face her dad "yes im hungry" she grumbled finally looking back at her dad who wore a sly smile. "Atta girl i knew i'd get you to talk to me" "yea well don't get too confident" cordelia responded cocking her head before turning back around.
The food stop her father claimed to be ahead was simply a small diner. cordelia peered out the window "MISSYS BIG EATS DINER" flashed neon red against one of the diner windows "missys big eats?" cordelia repeated wrinkling her brows, marco sighed "this is the only food stop till we get to your school and its still 2 more hours away" Cordelia's stomach rumbled in response, she grabbed her stomach looking to the side "i guess this will do" she said sarcastically rolling her eyes. The diner's heat engulfed the two like a warm hug. Cordelia shuttered, warming her hands up looking around. There was a long island top counter accompanied by stools, no more than a few medium sized booths, from what she could see there was one single use bathroom, and a pair of double doors that led presumably to the kitchen.
"Welcome to missy's how may i help you" a texan accent spoke. Cordelia looked up to see a tall maybe 5 '7 foot woman, which was tall for Cordelia's small stature. The woman's arms were covered in patchwork tattoos, large circle glasses covered her eyes, her ginger hair tucked under a black hairnet. Her uniform looked like one of those cartoon nurse uniforms minus the weird hat. Marco flashed a toothy smile "table for two please" he spoke smoothly, the woman giggled grabbing two menus before leading them to one of the booths
Cordelia wrinkled her nose up at her dad "what?" he asked still smiling "could you not try to seduce people in front of me" she asked raising her brows in disgust. Her father let out a hearty laugh shaking his head as he looked over the menu. Both sat in silence for a few minutes as they each tried to find something to eat "any idea what you're getting?" Marco asked, raising a brow at his daughter. "Hmm," Cordelia hummed, "I dunno, the pirate pancakes look pretty good" she said, shutting her menu pushing it to the edge of the table.
Before her father could respond the waiter appeared again "hiii" she spoke slyly, dragging out the i, it took everything in cordelia not to gag. "You two cuties ready to order?" she quipped looking at marco expectantly "ahem, yes" cordelia began "i'll have the pirate pancakes meal, eggs scrambled, no bacon please" she spoke quickly flashing a toothy smile at the end. The waiter grimaced at her fast talking "and for you sir?" she asked looking over to marco "black coffee and a plate of pancakes please" he said smiling shutting his menu. The waiter took both menus before walking off.
"Cordelia Maevery Colton" her father spoke tone low and sharp "i suggest you cut this attitude out and you do it now" he finished. "I have NO clue what you're talking about father dearest" cordelia responded with a sly smirk tugging on her lips. Her father sighed, shaking his head pulling out his phone.
Cordelia hummed to herself as she waited for her food to come boredom buzzing within her as she stared out the diner window "will you at least tell me how long i have to stay there for?" Cordelia questioned her face hopeful, her father looked surprised. "i dont know mi sol," he answered truthfully. It took everything in cordelia not to get mad at her father, after all it wasn't his fault she had to leave the bay.
It wasn't anyone's fault really. Cordelia shuddered remembering the accident. She was swimming around one of the reefs with her best friend reign, as she swam up to the surface she heard rei call her so she turned her back above the water. Sharp talons pierced her back causing her to scream as she thrashed in the water desperately trying to get away, her tall flipped up slapping the creature hard in the head causing it to fall into the water. Later they found out Cordelia had been attacked by a harpy. No one knew how the harpy got into the bay, or why it attacked cordelia. Laguna bay was a tight water fortress nothing had ever gotten in much less to attack anyone.
It scared everyone. So much to the point where now Cordelia was being sent across the country to a whole nother school. She really couldn't be mad at anyone except for the idiot harpy.
"Here you both are." the waitress said, placing Cordelia and her fathers plates on the table. Cordelia looked at her plate, a stack of pancakes drenched in syrup with a small toy boat on top. It made her smile thinking about her home. Cordelia really hoped this new school thing isn't permanent. She prayed in fact, and cordelia didn't pray.
