"Listen up cadets!"

The voice of lieutenant Carant left them all quiet. The past few weeks had been very interesting, not because of theire training, the Well had stayed the same if you don't count the increasing speed they had had to climb it. The time before you got shocked had become exponentially shorter, but they had grown more resilient to them. He could now take three or even four shocks and the rest could take two and sometimes three before they collapsed.

"Today is special, the top three will accompany a squad of stormtroopers patrolling the city. Also, today is the day you get to use blasters." He toke one of the modified E-11 blasters in his hand and showed it around. "These are modified so that they do not give of a killing or stunning shot, but an electric one similar to the shocks you get by staying on a platform for too long."

He each gave them a blaster and told them that close combat was still allowed. Then they moved into position and the floor beneath them dropped down into the ground. He closed his eyes and waited for the ending to the drop.

He knew that they had arrived because he felt the ground standing still, he opened his eyes and saw that they were quite far down. As soon as the lieutenant gave the signal the shooting started, cadets wanted to get others out of the way as soon as possible.

He saw the shot heading towards him and ducked, it missed him by a hair. Then he propelled himself upwards onto a platform, blaster clutched in his hand. From there he made a series of jumps until he was only two meters from the edge, he had avoided all of the shot coming at him, until this one. It hit him and for a moment it paralysed him, he was hit right in the back, on the spine. He wirreled around to see where the shot had come from and was hit in the chest, but now he knew who dared attack him. Glaric!

He leaped onto another platform to prevent the shock because he had already felt the hit of the second shot. There crouched down and shot at Glaric, it hit him in the arm and a second in the leg. Then he jumped to another platform and tock in another hit, but sprayed Glaric with a barrage of shots hitting him in the chest three times, Glaric collapsed onto his knee and he was free to continue his way up.

When he got up he looked back down and saw Glaric just about getting on his way again, but now he was in the very bottom of the lot. Suits him right. Lieutenant Carant looked at me and his lips actually formed into a smile. He couldn't believed it!

"Great performance Candian."

And as suddenly as the smile had reached his face it had vanished, he looked back and saw why. The others were now coming up one at a time. By the time everyone, including Glaric, were up lieutenant Carant was in his normal state. Hands behind the back and shoulders back and chin held high.

"Now that you are all up here," he flashed a look at Glaric that he couldn't really interpret and continued, "it is time I announced the ones accompanying the battalion today. First cadet Candian, second cadet Ordance and lastly cadet Lerec. The rest of you will report to sergeant Oral for weapons duty. I heard the old ones need cleaning again."

These were the lieutenants words for saying that they were dismissed and so most walked to the armory to clean weapons, heads down. Ordance, Lerec and he stayed where they were and waited for the lieutenants instructions. Finally the lieutenant turned his attention to them. "You will be awaited at the hangar doors in two standard hours, there a group of the battalion will pick you up. Do not be late!"

He turned around and headed to the part of the complex where the offices were located, probably to inspect some work or something like that. The three of them loosened and Ordance came over to him, to talk about something. He turned his body to face him and also Lerec who was following Ordance.
