I'm just the main character in popular books, with a set of instructions like this, I could never live up to them. I'm not going to lie, I'm still trying to process the whole "world destroyed, you're in a vegetative state, but somehow you're special and the key to saving the world" thing. It's a lot to take in.
I mean, the world Ophelia described was so different from what I knew. The war, the radiation, the loss of technology, everything. And now I'm supposed to be some kind of savior? There blaming the whole worlds issues on me like I'm supposed to fix them and save everyone. I sighed, feeling a mix of annoyance and self-pity wash over me. I didnt even know who I was, how was I supposed to save anyone else?
I closed my eyes and tried to focus on my breathing, to calm the frustration that was building up inside me. A woman walked in my room, she had long orange hair with freckles across her nose. Her eyes were a bright blue, and she looked at me with an expression that was both curious and sympathetic.
"I'm Alicia. I'm here to help you with your exercises today," she introduced herself, her voice gentle and soothing.
"Hello, do you work with Ophelia and Jason?"
She smiled. "Oh no, not at all. They are doctors sent from this zones leader, but I am part of the community here. We all work together to help each other survive and rebuild." Her words made me feel a little less alone. Alicia helped me sit up again and began guiding me through a series of exercises designed to strengthen my arms and shoulders. She was patient and encouraging, always making sure I was comfortable and not pushing myself too hard.
As I moved my arms and legs, I found myself focusing less on my frustration and more on the feeling of being able to control my body again. The weight of my limbs felt heavy, but they were mine, and with each exercise, they seemed to grow stronger. Alicia even showed me some basic stretches to help improve my range of motion.
"I think I can use them now. Can i tell you somthing?"
"Yes, of course."
"Well, I dont rember a lot, but I remember the feeling of a string attached to a piece of wood. It had somthing I could shoot. It was like a smooth piece of wood with a feather on the back."
Alicia looked at me intently, her expression thoughtful. "You're describing a bow, aren't you?"
"Yeah, that's it."
"That's fascinating. Your file did say that you were abnormally skilled with weapons, but we never would have guessed something like that. Perhaps there's more to your past than even you remember." She smiled encouragingly.
Another one of those fuckers who wanted me to become a hero . I rolled my eyes. Whatever. I'd play along, at least for now. I nodded, taking another deep breath as Alicia helped me lie back down. "Yeah, it's called a bow. I don't know how I knew that, but I did."
Alicia seemed pleased. "Do you want to try to stand?"
"I think I can stand on my own."
I stood up, my legs felt unnatural, but study after seconds I was able to keep my balance. Alicia beamed at me, clapping her hands together. "That's wonderful! You're doing so well, truly. If you ever need help or want to talk, please don't hesitate to ask."
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. As Alicia left the room, I leaned against the wall, taking deep breaths to steady myself. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on the sensation of standing on my own two feet, the weight of my body supported by my legs. It was a strange, almost surreal feeling, but it was also strangely liberating. I smiled to myslef and took my hands off the wall, walking freely out of the room and into the hospital hallway .
