arabella

the concert was amazing! madi and i had so much fun.

singing along and taking videos of gracie's performance.

afterwards, we got to meet her a take a couple pictures. she was so sweet.

i checked my phone as we were walking out. i had two missed calls from my dad. i shrugged.

it was probably him just calling to tell me goodnight and how he was sorry for yelling.

i'd call him back in the morning and tell him i had fallen asleep.

madi and i walked through the parking lot, our arms looped through each others.

she pointed the matt's van and we ran over.

we climbed into the backseat, laughing.

"oh my god! that was so cool!" she beamed.

"i know! i died when she started singing minor!" i said.

matt looked at us with a smile.

"i'm assuming you two had a lot of fun."

"yes! yes we did!" madi beamed.

"that's good, i'm glad. ara, are you going home with madi?" matt asked.

"no, you can drop me off at home." i smiled and looked at my phone.

"ok... should i drop you off at your house or... around the block?" he asked, laughing.

"my actual house." i laughed back as he backed out of the parking space and started driving.

he nodded.

once we got to my house, i looked in the driveway and my heart sank.

"shit..." i mumbled.

"what's wrong?" matt asked, looked back at me.

i looked at my dads car in the driveway. it was gone when i left. he should be at the airport by now.

"uh- nothing. goodnight, guys. madi, i'll you later."

"ok, bye girl."

i stepped out of the car and stood in the driveway for a second.

i sighed and walked forward to the front door.

"where the hell have you been?" my dad was sitting at the dining room table.

i sighed and shook my head.

"dad... im so sorry." i started, walking towards the table.

"arabella." he said, sternly.

i opened my mouth to try and explain.

"sit." he said, pointing to chair i was standing next to.

i pulled it out and sat down.

"i told you, you were not to go to that concert."

"i know! and im sorry! but i couldn't just give up the tickets! they were already paid for and madi didn't have anyone else to go with! and look! i'm ok! i'm safe."

"that's not the point! i told you and you didn't listen to me!" he shouted.

"mom would have let me go!" i shouted back, without thinking.

but as soon as the words let my mouth, i regretted them.

i looked down at the wood table, tears pricking my eyes.

he didn't say anything, just sighed and ran a hand down his face.

"i'm sorry... i didn't mean that-"

"ara, im trying my best. you have to understand that. i know, if she was here, she would have. but she's not. she's not here."

i nodded and a tear fell down my face.

"i'm sorry..."

"who took you? to the concert?"

"matt. he dropped us off and picked us up."

he sighed and nodded.

"ok..."

he loved matt. he always had. i could tell this made him feel slightly better.

"am i in trouble?" i whispered.

"i don't know."

"are you gonna take my phone?" i asked.

he always did whenever i was in trouble. i hated it but after what i did and what i said, i deserved it.

"no... im leaving tomorrow afternoon. i want you to have it so i can get a hold of you."

i nodded.

"not that this matters, but i thought you were leaving tonight?"

"i was. i left my laptop and had to come back to get it. i also went up to your room to apologize, but you were gone. i called my boss and i told him i'd just leave tomorrow."

i nodded again and swallowed. i clenched my jaw.

"it's late. you should go to bed. i'll see you in the morning."

i nodded again and stood up, pushing my chair in.

i walked to the stair case, stepped onto the first one and set my hand on the railing.

i paused and looked at my dad, he was still sitting, looking down at the table.

"i love you, dad." i said, quietly.

he looked at me.

"i love you too, ara. goodnight."

and with that, i ran up to my room.
