"Well," said Dean, "Are you coming?" I blankly stared at him. "You-you want me to come?" Dean never let me join him on a hunt. Even if I could be valuable to the case, I had to stay here and 'stay safe', but Dean knows this better than anyone else: the world is not a safe place. "Well if you don't come with us, you will be mad at me for a week. Besides...we need your help." I couldn't help but smile at what he said. I find myself smiling at a lot of things Dean says lately. People think that Sam and Dean are my brothers, but they couldn't be more wrong.
When I was younger, my family turned into monsters-I won't go into the gory details of the entire event, but that is how I met the Winchesters'. Dean was 10 years old at the time, I was 8. I lost and gained a family all within a day's time. John took me in and left me with a family friend so I could grow up 'normal' away from hunters and monsters, but I had already been exposed. And you know something? The nightmares never leave. Anyways, every year on my birthday John and the boys would come visit me. As time went on and John passed away, the boys stopped visiting until last year when the same monster who turned and killed my family almost killed me. Now, I consider myself a hunter. I stay home and do the research while the boys finish the job. I became like Uncle Bobby minus over excessive drinking and the bad mouth.
"April-are you coming or not?" Dean and Sam both looked at me with bags on their arms. I jumped up from my seat. "Yes! I mean-uh-yeah that's cool. I am coming, I just have to grab my things." I ran down the hall into my room, threw some clean clothes into a bag, grabbed my phone and laptop and ran outside to the Impala. There was no one in the car yet, I assumed that the boys were still inside waiting for me so I hopped in the driver's seat. I always loved the Impala, plus, I knew that Dean wouldn't like it if I was sitting in his seat and it is funny to see him get so frustrated with me. I decide to honk the horn to get their attention. Dean comes running out. "Oh-no-no-no, get out, get out now." I could hear Sam snickering as he walked around the car and got into the passenger seat. "April, I am not playing this game. Get in the back." I could see a slight smile through Dean's yelling. I sighed and moved to the back seat, honestly I didn't care, I was just happy that he had asked me to join them. "So, what are we hunting?" I ask, just eager to get on the road. "We aren't sure yet." Says Sam turning around to face me. "All we know is that there have been multiple dead bodies with the same thing missing." "What was missing?" I ask, my eyes getting wider with every word. "Their lungs." Sam replies and turns around to face the road.
I look out the window at all of the passing trees. I am pretty sure there is still a smile on my face from earlier. I hate being cooped up at the Men of Letter's base. It gets so lonely when Sam and Dean leave. Castiel comes to visit every now and again, but not as often as I wish. The sun starts to fade into the hills and I rest my eyes. I could hear the boys whispering. They must think I am asleep, so I decide to listen to their 'private' conversation. "I know you care about her, Dean." "Yeah, so? She is our responsibility, she always has been." "That isn't what I meant, Dean." There is a pause. I wonder who they are talking about. "Do you...love her?" Sam asks. "You should get some sleep, we have a long drive ahead of us." Dean replies. "You are avoiding the question." "No, I am focusing on the case and you should too." Dean turns on the radio to a classic rock station, his favorite. The music plays and I drift to sleep.
"Good morning, Sunshine!" Dean yells right in my ear. I try to open my eyes but the light stings for a minute. I blink my eyes open and realize I am in a hotel room. "When did I get here?" I say, my voice cracking a bit. "We got here last night, we didn't want to wake you so..." Sam starts to interrupt. "Dean carried you inside." Dean seems flustered, "I didn't want you to be in the cold all night." Sam looks at him, "We are in Florida." I start to laugh, "Thank you Dean." He goes to the door, "I am going to go get some coffee." He leaves and Sam and I are left alone. "Did you sleep well? You were out for a while." I sit up, and rub my eyes. "Uh, yeah. I slept decent." He comes over and sits next to me. "You still having those nightmares?" I look away from his steady eyes. "Yeah, um, they...come and go." My voice fades so I stand up and walk into the bathroom. I don't want to sit and talk about my problems to Sam. I brush my teeth and my hair, then study myself in the mirror. I am not the most attractive girl, dirty blonde hair, green eyes, 150 lbs, 5'6". I let my curly hair fall on my shoulders and leave the bathroom. I walk out and Sam is gone, but Dean is sitting on the bed. "I brought you some coffee." I walk over and take the cup from him. Smelling it, I know its vanilla. "Vanilla, my favorite, thank you." He is dressed in a black suit, white button up shirt, and a tie. "You look nice." I comment. His eyes meet mine, "We have a case, here, put this on." He hands me a zipped up bag and I give him a confused look. "Just put it on." I walk into the bathroom once again and open the bag. Inside is a navy blue woman's suit and a pair of black heels. I let out a squeal of excitement and then shut up. This means they want me to go in the field! I am actually going to be hunting! I put on the suit and the heels and walk out. Dean stands up and looks at me. "Well?" I ask. "That looks good on you, I mean, you look like an agent now, but you are missing something..." He reaches in his pocket and hands me a small leather book. I open it: it's a badge. "Are you serious? Are you-is this mine?" I squeal. "I thought you would fit in better with an ID. "Oh my goodness! You are wonderful! Thank you, thank you!" I pause. "I mean-"I go over a hug him. "Thank you, Dean." To my surprise he hugs me back. The Winchester's are not huggers. Sam opens the door and Dean stops hugging me. "The suit fits nicely." Dean says to me and Sam gives him a look. "Another body was found this morning, no lungs." "Right, well then, what are we waiting for?" Dean grabs his keys from the end table and walks out the door. "Looks good, April, you look like one of us now." Sam says. I look at him and smile, "Sam, I've always been one of you." He laughs and shakes his head.
The ride to the crime scene is filled with classic rock and research. Sam reviews his research with Dean and I, all of us bouncing questions back and forth. When we arrive at the crime scene, there are police cars everywhere. "Here we go." Says Dean as he opens up the Impala door. It squeaks a bit as it opens. I get out of the car and follow them. We are stopped by a tall man in uniform. "I am sorry you can't be here, this is a closed crime scene." Dean looks at him. "Actually we can, the bureau sent us," He and Sam pull out their badges so I do the same. "This is agent Gabriel, agent Collins and I am agent Presley." The man studies the badges for a minute. "I'm Chief Morgan. Sorry about the confusion, you can't be too careful, you know?" Sam nods and says, "So what are we looking at here?" Chief Morgan leads us into a small two story house. "Female, age 18, body in pieces. Her boyfriend found her this morning. She is upstairs." There is blood all of the walls and floors. I almost vomit from the smell. "Was anything missing from her?" Sam says. The Chief stops and stares at him. "It's funny you ask that. Something took her lungs." "Something," I ask, "What do you mean 'something'?" We all stop on the stairs. "No human being could do this." The Chief continues up the stairs and we follow. "It looks like there was a struggle downstairs, so why is the body upstairs?" Sam asks. "You tell me." We turn the corner and walk into what looks like a girl's bedroom. A girls lays dismantled from her body parts. Her chest, ripped open. "Do we have a name for our Vic?" Asks Dean. "Amanda Bridges." The smell in the room starts to irritate my stomach so I walk out of the room and run downstairs. I think I am going to puke. I make it outside the door and put my hands on my knees. I start breathing heavy, like I don't have enough air to fill my lungs. The pain in my stomach suddenly disappears and a paramedic comes over to me and asks if I am okay. I reply with "Fine." Accept I don't feel fine. I can't breathe. Suddenly I can't keep my eyes open and everything goes black.
"She is unstable." "Unstable? What do you mean by that? She was just fine!" I hear voices, but I can't open my eyes or mouth to talk. There is something on my mouth, I want to take it off, but I can't move. "Dean, calm down. I am sure the doctors are doing everything they can." Doctors? I start to panic. Where am I? "It seems that one of her lungs has collapsed and she has gone into shock." I hear a man's voice that I am unfamiliar with, must be the doctor. "I am sorry, her lungs collapsed? How can someone's lungs just collapse?" Dean starts to raise his voice. "Sir, we are working on the problem. All we can do now is let her wake up for herself. I'll be back to check in on her in about an hour." "Thank you, doctor." Says Sam. "You actually think that he is going to come back?" "Yes, Dean, I do. It's his job." "How does someone's lungs just collapse?" Dean asks, he sounds frustrated. "Do you think it could be a spirit? I mean, it wouldn't be the craziest thing we have faced." "Yeah..." Dean replies and his voice trails off. "I am going to go do some more research why don't you stay here for a while?" I can hear Sam leave the room, I am left only with Dean and the sound of the heart monitor.
