Epilogue One

Captain Demery sat in his office and it was his office once again, as he wrote up his report on the last few months. The station was intact, but a whole lot of people were hurting. Singh had pulled through, but Horowitz hadn't and that had hit Fitzgibbons hard as he and Horowitz had been close. Horowitz had been Jewish and Rabbi Jacobs had said a service for both him and Eve. The old Rabbi had insisted that Eve was at least part Jewish, despite that tiny nose of hers and had barely held back his tears until the service was over. Demery had hoped the service would help provide Fitzgibbons with some closure but it hadn't seemed to. Now, Demery had something he hoped would ease the pain a bit, but maybe he was just deluding himself. "Come in," he said as the admittance buzzer for the door sounded and Sergeant Fitzgibbons came in and stood to attention.

"At ease Hugh," said Demery softly and Fitzgibbons' posture softened just a trifle. "I know this might not be the best time for this, but there is something I need you to do."

"Yes sir," replied Fitzgibbons in a wooden tone, devoid of any emotion. "Just tell me what you need done Captain."

"We're still short a Lieutenant, with Frannie gone and now Eve, so I am going to have to get someone to fill in that slot," said Demery.

"Yes sir, I understand," replied Fitzgibbons with that same dead voice. "You know I will help break in the new Lieutenant when they arrive."

"They have already arrived," said Demery, holding out his hand. "Congratulations on your promotion Lieutenant Fitzgibbons."

Fitzgibbons looked like someone had hit him between the eyes with a hammer, but after a few seconds, he stuck out his large hand and shook Demery's offered hand. "Thank you Captain, I promise to do my best for you and make you proud."

"I already am," replied Demery. "You deserve the promotion and I know both Horowitz and Eve would have agreed with me. We can't bring them back, but we can make their sacrifice mean something by doing our jobs to protect the people on this station as best we can."

"Yes sir!" agreed Fitzgibbons with more life in his voice than there had been for the last week since the incident with the reactor core. The door buzzer went off again and this time Singh and Sam entered, though Singh was moving rather slow and Dr. Lee wasn't going to be letting him back on duty for a few weeks yet.

"Congratulations Hugh," said Sam slapping the large red haired man on the back and Singh offered his own hand in congratulations as both had apparently known of the impending promotion.

"How is the report coming sir?" asked Singh with a nod towards Demery's computer.

"It's giving me three kinds of headache," replied Demery. "We know what happened, but most of the proof is gone. The woman who was impersonating Thea Ferguson has vanished and the corpses of those aliens that Eve called Hunters all disappeared along with their devices. Ben has got a log of the computer hacking, but there is no way to tie that to our disappeared aliens."

"At least Ben and Null have the computer systems purged and everything is back under our control again," pointed out Sam.

"Yeah, there is that and Ben is now going to be working full time for Null," replied Demery. "I had a big argument with Kathy about that, but I won," and he smiled at the nickname for the Station Administrator that he had inherited from Eve.

"I don't think Null is doing too well Captain," put in Fitzgibbons and then he grimaced, "they are even more depressed than I have been acting."

"I don't have any magic wand to fix that," sighed Demery. "I just hope it is one of those things that time can heal."
