Avery POV
As I studied the man beside Kevin, a sense of familiarity washed over me, as if I had encountered him in a distant memory. His expression mirrored my own shock, his eyes widening as though he'd seen a ghost from the past. "Avery, you're here. I didn't know that you two are still toge..." he began, before Kevin swiftly covered his mouth, whispering something into his ear."Why won't you let him finish, Kev?" I questioned, raising an eyebrow in confusion.
"Yeah, didn't know that you and Brylle are still together," the man finished, his words trailing off.
"Is there some particular reason we can't be together?" I pressed, sensing an underlying tension in the air.
"Dang!" Brylle exclaimed, chuckling. "Still feisty as ever whenever you meet me, Avery. That's some progress even with your memory gone. Haha," he added sarcastically.
A spark ignited within me, a jolt of recognition jolting me upright. "Oh, I remember!" I exclaimed, excitement bubbling up like a forgotten melody resurfacing from a dream. "You're Toby, right?"
The revelation hung in the air, a beat of stunned silence echoing around us.
"Yeah," Toby stammered, a touch of surprise flickering across his features. "We met... years ago, right?"
"That's right, from before," I pressed on, the memories cascading back in a torrent. "You used to tease me mercilessly at the CD store, especially about the time I... well, let's just say I wasn't exactly welcoming on your first day." A sheepish grin tugged at the corner of my lips.
"And then there was that awkward graduation confession. I wasn't sure how to handle it back then, so I think I just avoided you completely."
The confession seemed to hang between us, a forgotten echo of youthful innocence. But then, something unexpected happened. The dam holding back the memories seemed to break, and details flooded back with a startling clarity. "But somehow," I continued, piecing together the fragments of the past, "we became friends after that, didn't we?"
As the room fell silent, a weight settled in my stomach. Had I overstepped? Were my words out of place? "Oh, I'm so sorry," I stammered, a blush creeping up my neck. "I may have... acted a little out of character. I just remembered all of that a moment ago, and I guess the excitement got the better of me."
Brylle, ever the quick-witted one, intervened. "Ah, yes, the fuzzy-faced guy," he teased, a playful glint in his eyes. "That... friend of yours, Toby."
A wave of relief washed over me as laughter erupted around the table. Toby, tears welling in his eyes from mirth, doubled over, clutching his stomach. Mich joined in, her melodic laughter adding to the symphony of joy. Even the tension that had been simmering seemed to evaporate in the warmth of shared memories.
"Fuzzy-faced guy, huh?" Toby wheezed between chuckles, finally regaining his composure. "Yeah, I guess I was a bit rough around the edges back then."
"Really rough," Mich chimed in, her voice laced with amusement. "But hey, at least you managed to snag her friendship eventually."
The weight of the past, once a burden, now felt lighter, replaced by the camaraderie and understanding that bloomed amongst us once more.
