Doc

The smoke around us barely allowed me to see in front of me, and the ringing in my ears seemed to be bewitched, deafening me with a loud throbbing that shattered my skull. I knelt next to the wall, which was only half standing, and tried to breathe. The air didn't seem to be getting into my lungs. It smelled of gasoline and blood, a hideous smell of torn and burning human bodies.
"Doc... Doc... do you hear me!" Dylan shouted as he shook me.
I staggered around, grasping blindly as I lost my balance. The uniform I was in was smeared in blood, and my helmet was on the floor next to me.

"Doc, it's Harper! Doc... Harper is hit!" he shouted again as he grabbed me by my protective vest and shook me.
"You have to help me, Doc... Doc," he shouted in a much higher-pitched, childlike voice.

When I looked up at him, Piper was standing in front of me. Her little face was almost covered by the helmet she had on, with tears that made her dirty face look even dirtier as they slid down her cheeks. The second bomb fell behind her, and she screamed loudly as her hands grabbed me while I held my ears.
"You have to help me... Doc... it's mom!" she shouted as she grabbed my hand.
I jumped up, realizing I must have fallen asleep again in the chair on the front porch, and pushed something to the floor. The sweat on my forehead dripped from my face as I looked down, gasping heavily for air. Piper's eyes were wide, and she stared back at me in fear.
"Mom... Doc... it's mom," she sobbed as she sat on the floor and looked up at me.
I staggered a few steps to the side and leaned against the fence surrounding the porch, gasping deeply.
"Doc! Doc... you have to go to the safe house... Emily isn't breathing," I heard Storm scream as he ran in my direction, followed by Josie, who ran past me to Piper.
"What?" I asked, still haunted by my dream, as I looked from him to Piper, who was staring at me with pleading eyes.
"Mom..." she uttered through sobs, and I looked at Storm and ran. I don't think I've ever run as fast in my life as I did at that moment when I sprinted across the track in record time.

The front door was open, and I heard voices coming from the bathroom where I was running. "Doc... quick," I heard King call, kneeling next to Emily's unconscious body while Duke gave her a heart massage, and Ivy gave her artificial respiration.
Her face was pale, and her lips were already purple when I slid to the floor next to her on my knees. The panic I felt blocked my brain, and everything I knew disappeared in a second when I saw her lifeless body in front of me.
"Doc... Doc!" Duke shouted as I looked up at him.
"She had a panic attack and fell in the bathtub... I couldn't get her to breathe!" he shouted as he ran his hands through his hair.

Panic attack!... Come on, Doc, pull yourself together. I tipped her head back and opened her mouth to give her artificial respiration. Duke slid next to her as Ivy knelt next to him and continued the massage.
"3... 4... 5," she said as she stared at me, her hands shaking wildly in panic.
I was out of breath myself, but with all my strength, I pushed the last breaths I still had into her lungs.
"Come on, Emily..." Duke shouted as he watched everything in panic. After a few more tries, she seemed to come to, and Ivy looked at me with relief.

Emily spat out water and began to gasp frantically as she grabbed my arm. The scream she let out was full of pain and anger.
"I got you... I got you, Emily," I shouted as I pulled her towards me.
I didn't think; I just did it, and this time she hugged me back. She cried loudly, to which I just held her tighter. Ivy placed a second large towel over her as she cried in my embrace. I only now realized that she was naked in my arms and looked at Ivy, who shook her head.
"What... what the hell happened?" I asked her, looking at King, who was sitting on the floor next to the bathtub with his arms hanging over his knees.
"Roger... Roger is dead," he said, looking up at me. "Emily's father... he's dead," he explained quietly.

She just held on to me tighter and cried even louder; the pain in her voice was so clear that I had to swallow. Storm ran into the bathroom carrying my medical bag as I looked up at him.
"Piper is with Josie," he said, confused and not knowing what to do.
"Get out... immediately!" I said sternly, and Ivy stood up and pushed Duke and King out. She got a bathrobe and helped me dress Emily. I kept looking at her face so as not to look at her naked body. I'm a damn doctor; why is this so hard for me?!
