bucky had a nightmare.

as usual, it was about his days as the winter soldier, the days that haunt him and won't stop haunting him.

he's breathing heavily, shirtless as he grips the kitchen counter, sweat coating his body and fear clenching at his heart.
the light flickers on and his breath hitches.

“bucky?” your voice calls out sleepily — of course its you, he had gotten out of bed when he woke up with a start and was almost screaming so to not wake you, he probably stirred you up either way.

“hey, doll.” he gruffs, turning to face your sleepy self.

“are you okay?” you ask softly, walking over to him, he lets out a huff in response, unsure what to say, he doesn't wanna worry you after all.

you wrap your arms around him, “another nightmare?” you ask, staring up at him.

another huff in response.

you rest your head against his chest and you can feel his heart pounding, “it's okay.” you hum gingerly “i’m here.”

bucky manages to take in a deep breath and his arms wrap around your waist, his heart calming down bit by bit slowly, and his mind begins to set at ease with you in his arms.

oh how you've always had this effect on him.

you trace your fingers along his back gently, humming a tune, then you look at him, “you wanna go back to bed?”

a slight smile at his lips and he nods, “yeah, need a full night's rest for tomorrow.”

you smile and then take his hand and lead him back to the room, still humming a tune airily, a tune you know sets him at ease,

and he couldn't be more thankful for you.
