Hunter felt sick about leaving Aubrey alone on the first day but now she had a friend and when they got into the lively classroom, she immediately began making friends with others. Hunter was so relieved.
The classroom was well, classroom sized. It had more desks than it should have, leaving the walkways small. The carpet was short and scratchy, even mud was tracked in. Was it mud or something else?
The room smelled wonderful, though. Of raspberries and was that mango? Aubrey would love this classroom and the books on the shelves even if she finished them all in a week.
Hunter was glad that this classroom had some books as many teachers didn't have enough to make a small library in their classrooms. Hunter looked over to the parents hoarding the poor, young teacher.
Hunter took a deep breath and started over, Willow at his heels. He got as close as he could but he still couldn't hear over the first-graders and the worried voices of the parents that have obviously not done this before.
He waited in the back and not too soon enough the crowd finally fell away. Hunter walked up to the teacher as she sat at her desk.
Ms. Mortars was a plump woman. She had calming teal eyes and a long flowery dress with tulips on them. Her short blond hair was perfectly cut at her shoulders."I'm sorry, but you're not in the right classroom" She said looking up at them.
"Actually my daughter is in your class and her brother." Hunter nodded back to Willow. "Can you tell me the basics? I know you've been repeating yourself today but I would just like the basics."
Ms. Mortars looked at him up and down. She sighed and nodded her head. "They will learn a lot. Stuff you learned in your time. Addition, subtraction, rounding, reading, writing, science, history and we might be able to do some field trips.
"There will be homework if they don't finish in class. We will also have time for just ourselves or with friends. They can even get caught up then too" She smiled at him and when Hunter opened his mouth to thank her she continued talking.
"I've been in your situation before. And I'm sorry about what had happened to you. If you need anyone to talk to. I'm here" Hunter felt heart broken. He had never been told that not even by his mother. She was always busy and trying to find work. She did say something remotely close to it but at the moment it felt so much better for him.
He didn't know he had tears in his eyes until Ms. Mortars pulled out a tissue. He gladly accepted it.
"I can see your touched but now you both probably need to get to class" She said with a light smile.
Hunter smiled and threw the tissue in the garbage then Willow grabbed his arm and said "Thank you, madam" and they left the room.
Hunter felt like it was wrong to leave Aubrey by herself. He looked up and down the hallway but there was nothing but people. No one looked suspicious. He gulped and walked with Willow to their side of the school. It felt so weird. It had even stayed with him through the first and second period. He had barely paid any attention during then.
During his third that's when the intercom went on in the room. It filled with the sound of a woppe and everyone looked at the speaker.
"Mr. Anderson, can we please have Hunter Tress to the elementary office please." The lady on the other side said in a clear voice. Hunter could tell it was that lady that gave him his packet of his schedule and things today.
"Why yes. Of course" Mr. Anderson said. When the intercom went off with the same sound. He turned to Hunter who was in the back messing with his backpack straps. "Hunter. Go ahead and go. I'll tell you what we did in class today on wednesday.
