" believe nothing you hear, and only one half of what you see"
Edgar Allan Poe
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐒 little, I have always been good at pinpointing people's emotions just by their facial expressions, and physical quotations. While it may have been something I had learned, or more so adapted to better understand my parents' mystifying disappointment in me, I still learned to love the 'little hobby' anyway.

It's always been fascinating to me, how unlike in the unrealistic world of fiction such as Marvel or DC, we don't need telekinesis, telepathy, or better yet superpowers to read other people's minds. But can effectively intuit what people feel or think through Empathic Accuracy.

The skill requires identifying prompt cues, telegraphed by the individual's body language and tone of voice. Facial expressions are micro motor movements in the face, generated through our emotions. To really attain the intricacy in interpreting what is being said through these characteristics, you really have to pay impeccable attention to facial movements from nose-wrinkling to facial tweaks. Hand movements from open/closed fists to cracking fingers, and change in tone from high to low.

It's all important in understanding, and gathering any non-verbal interpretation on how the person may respond, or any feelings they may be keeping at bay.

Being able to recognise these key things are what give me the upper hand in any interaction. From team meetings, to simply being able to get myself out of strained environments. If you have the ability to decode the manipulation from the head to the toes in people's bodies, then you're automatically able to understand how to manoeuvre yourself from any circumstance.

In a world full of manipulators and unsympathetic assholes, I rely on psychology. Always.

It has never left me in a state of imbalance.....

That was until that one Saturday, two nights ago, where I was unable to decipher the intent of the man who had made me feel like nothing but a rock under his expensive shoes, as he deeply muttered words of concern for my curiosity or, as he better described, my stupidity.

He was there physically, verbally, and yet the dull, grey look in his eyes made me believe that he was someplace else. Another mysterious planet in a galaxy nobody had heard of...They were empty, so empty, with no indication of any emotion or feeling whatsoever.

It was like his body was present yet his soul was someplace else.

He was a man so handsome, yet so dead in the eyes.

And that had struck a feeling I had yet to have truly experienced for a while now.

Fear.

Bubbling hot, red-blooded fear that boiled in my throat, burning me inside out, and giving me the sudden need to run away from him, so fucking far away without looking back.
