"So where are we going?" I asked Issac once we were in the car, driving to wherever he was taking me. "We're going to the boardwalk," he said, smiling. "Sounds fun," I said, but that wasn't extremely truthful. Last time I went there, close to no one paid any attention to me and I was attacked by a giant bird. Enough said.
Issac seemed to notice that I wasn't being truthful. "You don't seem that excited," he frowned slightly. I smiled, finding it endearing how he seemed worried that I wasn't happy. "No, it's just that last time I went there, I was attacked by a giant bird, but I still want to go" I laughed. Issac laughed too, and looked relieved. "Good, I was worried for a second," he admitted, and I blushed a little bit.
We pulled up right after this, as the walk there was only about 10 minutes, so the drive was nothing at all. "Why didn't we just walk?" I asked him, as he started walking us towards the shops. "A car is more impressive," he winks. I rolled my eyes and laughed, and he playfully pushed me. "Hey," I said, faking being hurt. "Sorry," he said like a five year old.
"Oh! Here's the place," he said as we approached a small looking diner, which was styled like it would have been in the 1980's. "Aw, this place is so cute," I said as I walked in. "I hoped you would like it," Issac beamed. We were seated in booth that was made out of a car, and ordered our food. "So, tell me about yourself," Issac said and sit back.
"Well, My name is Penelope and I am 15 years old. I am visiting here from Nebraska and my family is staying for the whole summer," I started, and Issac listened attentively. "Go on," he said. "Just tell me stupid stuff, like what's your favorite color?"
"My favorite color is purple, my favorite animal is a koala or a hedgehog, I like photography, and I have a younger sister named Josie," I said, rambling off about anything that I thought came to my mind. "Now tell me about yourself," I said.
"My name is Issac, I just turned 16, and I am from here. My favorite color is blue, my favorite animal is a giraffe, I like hamburgers, and I have a younger brother named Theo," he said. I smiled, and just at that moment, our food came.
Over lunch, we had small talk about random stuff. Things were still a little awkward because we really didn't know each other. But after that, Issac said we could walk around the boardwalk and see if there's anything to do that catches our eye.
"Hey, can we go on that?" I asked, pointing to a merry-go-round that a bunch of children were waiting in line for. "A carousel?" Issac asks, chuckling. "Yeah, why not? I miss being a child," I laughed. "Let's go," he said.
The funny thing is, we didn't really get that many strange looks. Issac paid for us both- he insisted- and we took a good amount of time picking out what horses to get on, just like a little kid would. Once we finally chose our horses and got on them, we only got one strange look from a girl who looked about 7 years old, but she shrugged it off.
"Oh, how I would love to be a kid again," I said, laughing. "Look here!" Issac said, and I saw he was taking a selfie of us on the carousel. I smiled and he took the picture. "That's one for the books," he smiled.
Once we got off, Issac insisted we rode one of the rollercoasters on the boardwalk. I said I didn't want to, so he responded with a "Whyyy?" that sounded familiar to what a six year old would sound like when told they can't have ice cream because they didn't eat their vegetables. So guess where we are now? Waiting in line for a stupid rollercoaster.
"Come on, Penelope, we'll have fun!" he said, noticing I probably didn't look very excited. "Whatever," I said, trying to hold a smile back, but failing. Issac noticed, and poked my cheeks. "There's a little smile," he said.
Once it was our turn to get on the rollercoaster, he let me choose where we sat, so I chose the middle. After we strapped in, the worker informed me that this particular rollercoaster went 70 miles per hour and went upside down twice. "WHAT?" I said, and looked at Issac, and he looked a little worried. "Sorry, babe, I didn't realize this was the line for that one," he said.
Once the ride began, I think he expected me to grab onto his hand or something, but if he did, he thought wrong. I gripped into my seat the whole time. Although, the ride turned out to be not that scary. "Hey, that was actually kind of fun," I laughed once we got off the rollercoaster. "See, I knew it wouldn't be that bad," he said, but I wasn't really paying attention. I was paying attention to the giant seagull that had just landed right beside me.
"Uhm, Penelope, why did you just stop?" he asked from a couple feet ahead of me. Then he saw the bird, and started laughing. "Hey! It's that bird that attacked you!" he said. But Issac's laughter set off the bird, and it was now attacking me. Again. I started running and Issac caught up and grabbed my hand. Soon, after probably 100 crazy stares, the bird was gone.
"That freaking bird," I said, rolling my eyes. He chuckled and let go of my hand, which I was grateful for. I didn't want to make things awkward, but I don't exactly enjoy holding people's hands. "You ready to go home now?" he asked. "Sure," I said. "I've had enough birds attacking me for one day," I laughed.
Issac dropped me off at my house, and the best thing was, it wasn't awkward. He walked me up to my door, and said goodbye. He didn't make a move or anything, which I was actually really grateful for. Yes, I like this guy, but I like to take things slow. By the time I got home, it was about 4:15.
"Hey honey, how was your date?" my mom asked. "Mom," I said in an annoyed tone. "But I had fun," I smiled. "Good," she said.
My phone buzzed, and I had a text from Issac. It was the picture we took on the carousel. I smiled and texted him back that I loved that picture."Who is it? Is it Issac?" she smirked. "Yes, mom," I said, annoyed. "It's just a picture we took," I said. "Ooh! Let me see!" she said, like an excited child. I rolled my eyes and showed it to her, and she replied with a loud "awww!"
"Well, we're going to dinner in an hour, so be ready," my mom said. I nodded and went to my room to rest, it had certainly been a fun day.
