Chasing Charlie around her studio as he laughs and runs away from her in mock fear leaves Azara to come to terms with shocking revelation. She was in love.
She had never been in love before, not in this context, but she knew this was it. She read about it in books, saw it in movies, and saw it through others. She felt love every time she looked at her parents, the ones that stepped up when the ones that created her abandoned her.
Azara was only four years old when she was put into the orphanage but she remembers why vividly. Her parents, her biological ones, had left her. She remembered her mother giving her an ice cream cone and telling her to wait by the ride they were supposed to go on. Her mother had to go change her brother; he had gotten his clothes dirty somehow.
She remembers waiting and waiting, and as day turned into night and the people in the park dwindled, someone finally took notice of the little girl sitting by one of the rides alone, ice cream long finished.
The man had called security and the police; perhaps she had gotten lost and her parents were looking for her. They kept her for hours until the park officially closed. Azara didn't know what was happening at the time but as she stood there with a lollipop in her hand to stop her from crying, she started putting two and two together.
Her parents had brought her to the park because it was her birthday to celebrate. They had played with her, created memories she would have—should have—cherished but ultimately left her. They didn't want her, did they ever? Azara was put into an orphanage two days later and would stay there for two years before her parents, her real ones, would adopt her.
Azara didn't remember many things about her older brother but she remembered his laugh. His face was blurry and she could never seem to remember how tall he was or what colour his eyes were; she couldn't even remember his name. But she always remembered his laugh. It was the thing she missed most about her former family. Her brother. Had he wanted to leave her to?
Azara felt love when she saw her brother, Dallas. Out of all the people in this world, she loved him most, although she would never admit it out loud. Dallas reminded her of the big brother she could have had, would have had, and should of had.
Dallas was her person, the person she wouldn't hesitate to die for. She loved him more than anything.
Charlie was an unexpected outlier in her life.
Azara couldn't remember when exactly he had become such an important part of her life, only that in the years they had known each other, he became a part of her and she knew if he left her, she wouldn't be the same. Love.
Azara had never been in love because she never allowed herself to fall in love. She was scared that they would ultimately leave her. Could you really blame her for that, though?
She remembered promising herself to stop herself if she was ever falling in love—to stop herself before she fell into that pit. She never thought that she would realise she was in love when she was already at the bottom of said pit.
She looked at him as he stopped on the other side of the table. laughing at her attempts of catching him.
Azara Sora Liu was in love with Charlie Bushnell but she had never even seen it coming. How would she tell him? Should she tell him?
