She walked to the construction site from school. She looked down at her feet. She looked at her dirty old tennis shoes, caked in dirt, all covered in pink, fading away. Hazel loved her shoes though because they held so many memories and they also held her feet in them. Hazel always thought she had beautiful feet. She loved how they were fast and strong and loved how her toes slightly curved and how her feet always seem to smell like fresh grass.
Hazel finally made it to the construction site, where a house was being built. Her Uncle Jake was a construction man. She walked to a man in overalls, climbing on a ladder. "Hey there Haze." Said the man. "Hello Jeff." Hazel replied. "The boys in the back over there." Said the man, pointing behind his shoulder. Hazel walked to the back of the shed where Jake was, messing with logs of wood in the back of his white truck. "Oh hey Hazel." Jake said and stood up in the back of the truck and wiped his dirty hands on his overalls. Hazel looked up at him. "Hello." She replied. Jake hopped down off the back of the truck and rubbed his hands together. He picked up his old green and black gloves off the side of the truck and walked into the shed where for now the workers kept a table with some snacks and a water jug with some chairs in the shed. Jake grabbed a clear plastic cup off the table and pored some water in it. "I guess we're done for today, you ready to go home?" Jake asked. "Yeah, it's pretty hot here." Hazel said. " I don't see why your complaining, you've been in school all day, I've been out her baking all day." Jake told her and they walked out the shed to the truck. Jake got in his seat and drove to the front of the shed. "Hey Jeff, I'm going now!" Jake rolled down hazels widow and called out to the man on the ladder. "Alrighty, you go on home now and enjoy your selfs in the conditioned home and leave me out here to fry!" Jeff called out and chuckled.
When Jake and Hazel got home, the walked in an Jake went into the kitchen. "Hey Jake can I ask you a question?" Hazel asked, as she walked into the kitchen and leaned against the counter and looked at Jake. "Sure Haze." Jake replied and turned on the sink an rinsed his hands. "We'll there is these kids at school, and I don't think they like me. They think I'm a loser and they tease me, and they're popular and I'm not. What do I do to be popular and make them like me." Hazel asked. "We'll I'm new at this but, do what ever you can to make them like you and to be popular because being popular and being friends with the populars, will get you some where in life." Jake replied. "Oh....uh ok." Hazel said and walked out the kitchen.
The next day Hazel didn't have school so she went with Jake to work. When she was wondering around as Jake worked Hazel saw a big black truck with a couple of kids coming down the road. Hazel noticed the kids, and knew who they were. The tall blonde one was Claire Ponder, the short tan girl was Jenni Bellow, the tall brown headed boy was Chris Stafford, and they were the popular kids they teased Hazel because she was a "loser". The truck came to a stop and the kids hopped out the back of the truck. When they saw me they whispered to each other and slowly walked up to me. "Hey Hazel why are you here?" Jenni asked. "My uncle is a constructionist." Hazel answered. "My daddy is the boss!" Claire said, forceful, like she was quickly trying to top Hazels response. Hazel just looked at Claire. "Claire!" A man called from the truck, he was a tall man, with greasy looking hair, his hair was grey and he wore a suit. Why a suit to a construction site, Hazel wondered. "Yes daddy?" Claire called back. "I have some work to take care of, so you and your friends need to stay away from the tools an the buildings!" The man yelled back to Claire. "Ok daddy!" Claire said. Claire then got a devious smile on her face. She looked at me then whispered to Chris then to Jenni. The all smiled at me. "Hey, Hazel, wanna be in our group? You know a popular kid like us?" Claire asked, grinning. Hazel almost jumped out of her shoes at the question. "Yes!" Hazel replied in a nod. "Ok then follow us." They walked to the back of the shed were to house was being built. Claire looked around the shed at the workers conversating with Claire's dad. "Ok good the constructionist aren't looking." Said Claire. "Ok so if u want I hangs with us, you HAVE to climb the house!" Claire said and pointed at the building. The busing was big but only were they made of poles right now. "But we were told not to." Hazel replied. " do you wanna hang with us or not? Listen its a dare, an if you hang with us, you have to break some rules." Claire said with her hands on her hips. Hazel sighed and looked back at the house.
Hazel started to climb the house. She slowly grabbed another bar at a time climbing higher and higher. The sky grew darker and lighting started to flash and thunder crashed and roared which scared hazel. Soon it started poring rain, thudding against hazels head and hands, making her and wet and slippery. The metal bars hazel was climbing on became wet and slippery, to wet an slippery to where she could hardly get a handle or grasp on the bars. "Guys! We should wait! It's to hard to climb!" Hazel yelled down at them. "No!" They all yelled in unison. Hazel took a breath and tried to grab another bar. Thunder crashed and lighting flashed so bright, blinding Hazel, to where she couldn't see. Hazel was frightened. She missed the bar and fell high above the ground.
