Y/n stood up shakily, gripping Newt's bicep for stability, he flashed her a quick grin before placing a hand on her waist, steadying her. She laughed nervously and straightened up, taking a few steps away, putting them at a comfortable distance.

He beckoned her to follow and she walked beside him, curiously looking around at the few dozen boys around the campfire. Happy, but mostly drunk faces, lit up by the flickering orange flames danced in her peripherals.

"Over there is the Builders," he started, "good with their hands..but not much goin' on up here" Newt tapped his head with a grin.

Y/n nodded, studying the stocky figures of the Builders.

"Then we have our Medjacks, Clint and Jeff!" He greeted the two boys, who both smiled at the Newt and Y/n. She waved nervously. Newt softly wrapped his hand around her wrist, pulling her over to a group of boys.

"And you've already met Minho," Minho gave her a curt wave, "And these are the...Runners."

Y/n glanced at him, confusion rippling over her face.

"Runners?"

Newt gave her a look that said I'll tell you later, and she raised her brows knowingly. "Runners..got it."

Y/n stepped back to look around when a hard brick-like body was shoved into her, knocking the breath out of her lungs. She fell forward onto her knees, small rocks below stabbing into her knees.

She caught her breath and rolled over to face the crowd, all eyes on her. She stood up, brushing the dirt off self-consciously.

Y/n spotted a tall, sturdy figure, Gally, she remembered, staring at her.

"Does the Greenie wanna go?" He smirked. "Or is she a little coward?"

The boys around jeered and catcalled.

Newt sighed, running a hand down the side of his face. "Get off it Gally. She's new."

Gally chuckled, and grinned, "But I wanna see what the new girl's got." He said smugly.

Newt shook his head "Ya shouldn't be d-" Y/n interrupted him. "I'm not a coward. Try me" She glared at Gally defiantly, taking a step forward.

The boys around her hooted and laughed, pushing her into the circle, as she stumbled in, nerves began to bubble in her stomach and bile rose in her throat.

Gally's smug expression filled her view as she waited for the signal.

Y/n shakily raised her fists, adrenaline running through her veins like fire, as her eyes narrowed at her target.

Gally leapt at her, rage flaming in his gaze.

Jesus, what did I do to him? She thought but barely had time before a fist missed her cheek narrowly.

She jumped away with a screech and circled behind him, crouching.

He growled and clawed at her, she ducked, her hand shooting up to grip his forearm and shove Gally away.

Y/n stumbled back onto her behind, the bulky figure forming a shadow over her.
"I'm gonna enjoy this, shank," Gally said menacingly, his voice low enough for only her to hear.

Her heart pounded like a drum inside her chest, and her eyes flicked to the worried boy behind Gally, ready to stop the fight.

Newt.

Y/n shook her head. What am I doing? I can't back down like this.

Her hands gripped into the dirt as Gally approached her, eyes studying her like a predator to prey.

As he raised his fist, she grunted and kicked out with her feet, landing a blow on his abdomen, pushing the air out of his lungs, making him double over.

Cheers and howls came from the boys around them. She stumbled to her feet, panting hard, sweat glistening on her skin and dirt smeared on her face when Gally's shadow crossed over her as he stood up straight, determined not to be beaten by a girl.

Y/n tilted her head up, confidence sparking in her gaze when a tall, slim figure stepped in between them.

"Fights over shanks. It's a tie" Newt's strong accent filled her ears and she dropped her hands to her sides.

Gally huffed and stormed off, his little mob of Builders following him, their chattering fading away.

Newt approached Y/n cautiously, inspecting her, his eyes trailing over her face and body for injuries. She crossed her arms self-consciously and avoided his gaze.

"Sorry," she mumbled. "You have to admit, he was being a bit of a dick."

Newt barked a laugh, "You definitely have some spunk, Greenie."
He slung an arm around her shoulder and led her to the barracks, the coals of the fire dimly lit, with only a few boys crowded around, most asleep.

Y/n felt her cheeks flush at his touch and rolled her eyes inwardly at her antics.

He's just a guy. Yes, with a super cute accent, and he's super tall and-

STOP!

He's just a guy.

Or so she thought.

As they approached where she would be staying for the night, she felt the events and tiredness of the day wash over her and she was so grateful to actually have a place to sleep

Y/n felt the arm slide off her shoulder as she stepped into her room, and she turned to lean against the doorway, in what she thought was relaxed, but she could feel her face starting to heat up at his gaze.

She opened her mouth to say goodnight when a warm finger touched her cheek, swiping something off it.

"You had- uh - some dirt, from the- the fight on your cheek," Newt said nervously, whipping his hand back and rubbing the back of his neck.

Y/n swallowed and nodded, her face flushing.

"Thanks. I totally won that fight though," She flashed him a smug smile.

Newt's eyes glimmered with amusement and he crossed his arms.

"I'm pretty sure Gally would disagree with that."

Y/n grinned and rolled her eyes playfully. Silence settled between them.

"Well," Newt broke the silence with a huff of air, "I better let ya sleep. Y'know, it's been a long day probably for you and- uh yeah." He shot her a small smile.

Y/n nodded, stepping back into the warm room and watched as he walked away.

Ugh.
