After her mother left, Lara decided to try to hunt Ivy down. After a half hour on the computer, she gave up. For some reason Ivy Mitchell didn't exist online. I thought that was only for criminals.. or teachers. Lara thought. So much for doing my Trig. A smile crossed her face. I wonder what's on TV?

Flipping through the channels, Lara frowned. Why was Friday night dedicated to kids shows? I can't be the only teenager who doesn't have a date tonight? There's gotta be an audience for those of us not sucking face in the back seat of Chevy. Well maybe not a chevy, Lara didn't know anyone who owned a Chevy, but a truck, yeah sure. That brought her mind back to this afternoon when Annie had slammed the car door into her arm. Maybe Ivy had been hurt when that door opened? Maybe that was why she ran off? But Lara couldn't stop thinking about Ivy's expression. She had looked so strange, just staring and staring at the kid. But why? Little kids were everywhere. What was so special about Annie?

Her stomach rumbled, interrupting her thoughts. Pizza tonight! In fact, maybe she'd do it up right. Walk down and get one of Joe's gourmet pizzas, dripping with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni, then afterwards she could watch a movie. Not the perfect night, but a lot better than getting up and facing school the next day.

Growing more pleased at the thought, Lara grabbed her coat and the money her mother had magnetized to the fridge. She was just picking up the car keys when her phone buzzed. Huh? Who called instead of texting?

"Hello?"

"Is this Lara? It's Ivy. Look, I thought I should talk to you in person and apologize for running out on you like that, it was just that kid-" but she didn't sound sorry. She sounded annoyed, as if she had fulfilled a duty, instead of a desire.

"Hey forget about it. Annie always is a bunch of trouble," Lara laughed.

"Annie? So you know her name?"

"Sure, I babysit for the Hawthornes at least once every couple of weeks."

"Hawthornes, you mean the little brat is the sister of Ms.Wet Dreams Queen?"

"Well, yeah," Lara muttered uncomfortably. She liked Annie. "But Chelsea's usually out on a date, so I get stuck with the job, pays pretty good though."

"Oh."

There was a long pause on the other end of the phone. Lara wondered what was up, and whether she should say something, when Ivy suddenly spoke up. She sounded much happier then before, almost anxious.

"Hey, you doing anything tonight?"

Unless you count watching a movie as a-thrill-a-minute evening, no, I'm not doing anything, Lara thought to herself, annoyed that her new friend had found out she was home on a Friday.

"No, not really, just catching a flick," she replied.

"You wanna come over then? We could hang out, do some popcorn, stuff like that. And," she added. "I could get your Trig book back to you."

Lara's brain began to click into gear. Her mother couldn't get mad at her if all she was doing was getting her Math book back. She'd have to understand that she'd need to leave the house for that. In fact, her mother would probably insist on her going, knowing how lousy Lara's grades were. So what if Lara had promised to stay in? She'd also promised to get better grades, which was more important? Besides as long as she didn't spend the whole night it didn't count as breaking a promise.

"What time?"
