It's not the sound of a girl humming along with a fan, it's the sound of your dad tucking you in as a little kid with your favorite stuffy as he hums your favorite song cause he knows it helps you sleep a little bit every time he does. It's the sound of your dad gently waking you up with a plate of pancakes and chocolate chip waffles telling you that breakfast is ready, and come and eat before it gets cold. It's the sound of playing in the backyard with your dog, your dad, and your older brother when it was still just the four of you. It's the sound of laughter in the warmly lit living room while you're watching a funny movie with them cuddled up with your dog on the loveseat while your dad and brother share the big couch. It's the sound of making sunday cookies with your dad, and brother while the three of you make plans of what you're going to do next weekend while going over all the stuff that you guys did that weekend and picking out which movie you wanna watch ahead of time so you don't waste a precious moment debating what you should watch. It's the sound of staying up a bit later than usual to watch the new show with your dad that's just for the two of you while your brother and dog are both tucked into bed fast asleep together. It's the sound of the three of you piling onto your dad to wake him up after having a family sleepover on the trampoline on a warm summer night. It's the sound of your dad reading his latest writing to you, and your brother since the three of you have always had the love of literacy in common. It's the sound of you, and your brother being tucked into each side of your dad while you all take your family nap together after playing outside all day, and before your dad starts dinner. It's the sound of the movie being long forgotten in the background as the three of you get carried away playing DnD, and before you know it 2am, because your dad is such a good storyteller, that you couldn't but get carried away in the game play and had to find out what was gonna happen next. It's the feeling you get when you wake up in the middle of night reminiscing on all those memories before you walk out of your room, but not as a little kid but as a 14 year old girl using the light of the tv as a nightlight, as you find your dad passed out half hanging off the couch with an empty beer bottle in his hand and the rest of the empty bottles spread out on the table. It's the sound that plays in your head as you clean up your dads drunken mess before he wakes up so he doesn't get angry at what was left from the night before. It's the feeling you get as you take his shoes off that he was too drunk to think about let alone take them off himself. It's the feeling you get when you collect the bottle caps to keep track of how much he really drinks in one day, let alone the three days of the week that he gets to see you, and your older brother. It's the feeling you get when you do your best to get him on the couch while keeping him on his side in case he throws up in his sleep. It's the feeling you get when you make sure your dad has a pillow, and a blanket while turning on the fan in front of his face hoping it will keep him asleep just a little bit longer in the morning. It's the feeling you get while walking back to your room wishing that you were a little girl again falling asleep against your dad and his making sure you're comfortable in bed instead of making sure he's on his side, because you truly don't know how much he really drank that night.
