2013

"This is how you gon' do me? After everything I've done for you?" DeAndré scoffed. "I gave you everything you wanted and more, and this is the thanks I get?"

"You ain't give me shit but heartache and black eyes, but I stayed because I loved you, Dré," tears welled up in Megan's eyes as she spoke. "But love don't live here no more—I'm done." She continued packing her bags.

"You think you can just walk out on me? Don't nobody walk out on me!" Dré screamed, causing her to jump.

"Dré, it's over," Megan stood her ground. She picked up her bags and walked toward the door.

"You not going nowhere." Dré blocked the door.

"Dré, move," Megan said firmly.

She was determined to leave, and she was going to do so—by any means necessary.

The two stood in a standoff: Dré wondering when Megan would give in, and Megan waiting for Dré to step aside.

"I'm not about to do this with you," Megan said, reaching for the door, only to be pushed back by Dré.

"I said you not leaving. If I can't have you, then nobody can," Dré said, his shoulders tense, his nostrils flaring like a bull ready to charge.

"What you gon' do, Dré? Kill me?" Megan looked him up and down, not showing an ounce of fear.

"If I have to, I will," Dré growled as he stepped closer.

"Goodbye, Dré," Megan said, heading for the door.

"I said you not leaving me!" Dré grabbed Megan by the arm. At that moment, she decided enough was enough. She retaliated, throwing a punch that landed squarely on his face.

Dré began swinging wildly, throwing punches wherever they would land. They had gotten physical before, but this time was different—Megan wasn't backing down. Dré grabbed her by the neck, pinning her to the floor.

"Look what you made me do!" he shouted.

"Dré, please!" she begged in a raspy voice, tears streaming from her eyes as she fought back with everything she had.

She felt her life slipping away, knowing she didn't have much time to make a decision that could save her. She grabbed a ceramic lamp from the end table and smashed it over his head, causing him to collapse.

"You stupid bitch!" Dré screamed, darting toward her again.

Megan grabbed her Glock 9 from her purse, aiming it at Dré.

"Bitch, if you gon' pull a gun on me, you better use it," Dré scoffed, holding the cut on his head. "Do it, bitch! Shoot me!"

She returned the favor, giving him exactly what he asked for, and shot him in the shoulder.

"Fuck!" he cried out in pain, clutching his shoulder.

"Take another step, and the next one goes in your fucking head," Megan warned, standing her ground.

She grabbed her bags and headed for the door.

"This ain't over, bitch!" Dré shouted from inside the apartment.

Megan ran down the stairs, loaded her bags into her car, and sped toward the highway. A sense of relief washed over her as she drove away, as if a chapter of her life full of pain and misery had finally closed. A new chapter, full of opportunities and a fresh start, was opening. She didn't know what the future held, but she was ready for whatever life was about to throw her way.
