(i'm also really bad with remembering embry's pronouns for some reason so if i write "she" on accident anywhere please point it out!!! ty)

embry and dr. d light stood in front of the door to the basement. despite all their better judgement, they had opened the door so dr. d light could peek inside. embry stood off to the side as he peered down the long staircase.

"welp, let's go on then!" dr. d grinned. still cheerful as could be. "what?-" embry started before grabbing his sleeve as tight as they could as soon as he took his first step. dr. d. light looked confused.

"i said we could open the door!" embry shouted, struggling to pull him back. "i didn't say you could go down!"

"e-eh? what do you mean? of course we have to go down! that's the whole point, isn't it?" his cheery smile didn't fade. he scratched the back of his head, confused by embry's terror.

"no! you can't!" they pleaded, still pulling his arm. "embry, let go!-.." he asked again, and embry still shouted "no!"

and that was what made the doctor realize they had begun to cry.

no, the child wasn't sobbing, but they were sniffling and holding his arm as tight as their weak self could. dr d. light stopped trying to pull away, "oh, embry-.. are you crying?" embry didn't reply, they just kept holding his arm.

the doctor pushed the basement door shut, then crouched down to the terrified child. "hey, hey, it's okay.." he whispered, keeping a soft tone. embry looked at him now, tears slowly flowing down their face one by one. "i'm sorry, embry. we don't have to go down now, okay? you don't have to go down at all." he softly cupped their face, and wiped their tears with his gloved fingers.

"you can't go down there." they pleaded, "please please please don't go down. you'll die if you go down there."

dr. d was shocked at how badly they didn't want to go downstairs, but he still put his arms out, and waited until they were ready to scoop them up. "we won't go down, okay? we can stay up here for now."

embry, though hesitant, rested their head on his shoulder. "i told you, there's something bad down there, and it's gonna hurt you. it wants to hurt me too." they wiped their eyes, and murmured "it already hurt my parents."

"your parents?" dr. d tilted his head. "did something down there make them sick?"

"no," embry didn't want to admit it, but they couldn't let there be any chance of d. light sneaking down there. "..my parents aren't really sick, doctor. they're dead."

d. light didn't believe them at first, "embry, you don't have to lie to me." he said sweetly, but then embry snapped right back. "i'm not lying!" their sudden shouting surprised him. "there really is something down there, that's why i had to say they were sick! because nobody would believe me! you think i'm crazy too!"

that could not have been further from the truth. dr. d. light, although he didn't believe them, he never in a million years would have heard this story and called someone crazy. he was thinking they had some severe case of anxiety, or were having hallucinations. an overactive imagination at least, but they weren't crazy. he knew that. "embry, i— i don't think that! not the slightest bit.." he said, hugging the child again.

"i can prove it too!" embry turned around to enter the kitchen. the doctor followed behind them, and watched them prepare a sandwich. "..are sandwiches all you can eat? you don't seem to have much else,"

"i manage." embry said nonchalantly, turning around and walking away with the sandwich. they then undid the lock on the door, opened it wide, and threw the sandwich down. the second it was out of their hand, they slammed the door shut and re-locked it.

with an annoyed expression, they watched dr. d light's expression as he listened.

a monstrous groan came from the basement,

and he seemed to reconsider all the possibilities he'd taken from embry's story.

"do you believe me now?" they asked with an annoyed tone, and that snapped him out of the small trance he was in. "i- ehm- i believe you!" he coughed, crouching down to them again. "..how long has this been going on?.."

"four months now." embry looked at their shoes. there was a long minute of silence, before the doctor crouched down to the child.

"embry," he said, before needing to clear his throat, "embry. if you wouldn't mind.. could you tell me how this all began? we can.. we can talk over tea."

"..sure. drinks would be nice." embry muttered, "i don't have tea, but i have water in the fridge."

the doctor had poured a glass of water for both of them, placing embry's in front of their chair before sitting down himself. "so embry.. when did this all start with your basement?"

"um.." embry thought hard, "i don't remember every detail, but my parents had to go down to the basement to get something. but they were gone for a really long time. and when i went to check on them, all i heard was them yelling to lock the door." they held their glass of water, "so i did, and i put all the chains on it too."

"what happened to your parents?" the doctor asked. that question seemed to make embry tense up, but he followed it with "you don't have to answer anything you don't want to."

"..i don't know what happened to them." embry looked into their drink. "but i think it ate them. it mimics their voices sometimes, it wants me to go down there too. that's why i feed it everyday. so it doesn't eat me."

they looked back up at him. "that's why i haven't left yet, too. i'm scared that if i go, it.. it might hurt other people."

dr. d had a frown on his face. "oh, embry, i'm so sorry.." he apologized. "i promise i'll try my best to help you. the two of us will find a way out of your predicament together, okay?"

"wait, what?" embry nearly coughed on their beverage. "no, you have to leave! why would you want to stay after that?!"

his face shifted into a small smile. "because i want to help. i came to help you, embry, and i won't stop until i do."

embry looked shocked still. they couldn't help thinking, he wants to help me? after that whole story he's still staying? why would he still want to help— does he really care that much about me?

but while they were in their deep thought, dr. d light picked up their drinks and placed them in the sink. "i can wash these dishes if you'd like?" he smiled, and embry nodded. then, after he thought for a second, he started talking again. "embry?"

they looked up at him. "if you don't want me to, you aren't forced to. but i don't feel comfortable with you sleeping alone with a monster. would i be able to sleep here, on the couch or on a chair? just for one night."

he really did care that much about them.

that question, the idea of someone staying with them just to protect them. it made their eyes water. before they even answered, they wrapped their arms around the doctor, nodding violently. he chuckled a bit and lifted them up, "thank you, embry."

(good heavens that was sappy.)

(i want to make this a real fic, not just a one shot like i usually do, so i'll keep writing chapters for it!!!!)
