I was broken more times than I can count. If I have to be honest, I don't remember anything good from my past life. Just the bad things. Just the feeling of horrible pain, torture, humiliation, loneliness... But only in these times. Only when it hurt the most I felt unstoppable, undefeatable... In those times I was the most powerful. Trust me, you wouldn't want to be on my bad side. You would probably end up dead.
,,Hello Rayl, buddy! Did you hear? Some weird traveler came in town yesterday. They say it's a chick, she was dressed really oddly. She must be from far far away. She has to be a fighter of some sort, she carried two daggers, my wife saw it herself. She said she looked scary. Isn't that funny? How can a woman look acary? Haha... please. Give me another drink."
Elex was a regular at Rayl's tavern. It seemed like he always knew about everything that happened in town. Maybe it was just a habit from when he still belonged to the knights.
Travelers are no news here. ,,Here is your drink Elex." Rayl scoffed. ,,Are you sure your wife is not exaggerating? We see travelers a lot here, you know? They always come to my tavern at least once, before leaving the town. Also there is nothing weird for a traveler dressed unusually, when they are from a different region. You always make it sound so fancy.."
Rayl still had a long shift ahead of him. The night just started, so he hoped to be at least entertained by some random gossips.
Just as they stopped talking, the door to the tavern opened and a woman stepped in. She didn't even look around, before making her way to the two men on the bar. Everyone went quiet as she took a seat next to Elex. She put down her cape and released a long brown hair to fall down her back. She eyed the bartender curiously, not sparing a glance to the people watching her.
,,I will have the strongest drink you have, mister. I'm a bit tired." She exclaimed.
Rayl simply nodded and started preparing her the drink while stealing glances to her hips. There she had two daggers, shining misteriously. Was she the chick Elex gossiped about? They were no ordinary daggers. To him they looked too fancy, maybe she was some rich girl just showing off.
Elex was quietly sipping on his drink, carefully observing the situation. The tavern slowly became noisy again, while Rayl served the drink. The woman grabbed it happily.
,,Oh, apologies. I didn't introduce myself. My name is Xenia, I am from the fire region's suburbs. I was looking for some entertainment, so maybe I could have some of your time? Um.. cheers?" She lifted her glass to Elex.
,,Elex, my pleasure." The man smirked and gently tapped the glass for a toast. ,,And this charismatic bartender is Rayl. The owner of this tavern."
Rayl coughed. ,,Man, I got my own mouth, " turning to Xenia ,,nice to meet you too."
The woman smirked. ,,Oh? The owner himself is working here? You seem to be a bit young to own a tavern. You got it from your parents I assume?"
Rayl put back the polished glass and sighed. ,,Yes, I decided to take care of the tavern after my parents died."
Xenia looked on the polished glass. ,,Oh, sorry to hear that." She said, although she didn't seem to be sorry at all. ,,I am parentless as well." She took a sip of her drink and smiled. She said it so casually, that it was scary.
Elex turned to the side. ,,Guys, we all came here to have fun, why talk about the sad things." But there was only silence folowing, everyone probably deep in thought at the awkwardness around them.
Xenia bit her lip, then exclaimed something very unusual. ,,What part of this pathetic life isn't sad." Elex asked what she said, since he didn't hear it clearly, but Rayl did hear it and was preparing to say something, when she energetically replied. ,,Yes! Let's have some funny chat. Shall we?" And gave the two men a big smile. These few minutes were indeed strange and uncomfortable for all of them, however one person did not seem to be fazed at all.
Rayl watched Xenia's eyes as she turned and smiled at him. Elex got the hint and pretended like he heard nothing, asking Xenia. ,,So lady, what brought you here?" On that, Rayl was sure Xenia's eyes sparked up.
,,Oh a good question. We are curious I see. Well then, since you two are giving me a good company, I might tell you. I heard that you are having troubles with the monsters so I came to help. It's true you lost some good knights ten years ago... No wonder, you are so weak without them."
Elex froze in place. ,,How would you know... No one is supposed to know about this... only the head knights...
Xenia laughed. ,,Oh so you remember. You remember the small girl you filth killed?" Sarcasm visible in her tone. ,,Don't tell me you feel sorry you old shit."
Rayl raised his brows. Do they know each other? ,,Now now, take it easy-"
Xenia turned to Rayl. ,,You honey, please shut your mouth for me, would you. This isn't your business." She gently laid her hand on Elex's thigh and whispered. ,,You killed her. But be carefull. I heard karma always gets you back. Also what goes around, comes around."
Elex didn't move an inch. Just stared at the empty glass in his hand. ,,I-, I didn't kill her."
Xenia pulled a small bag and threw the bartender a golden coin. ,,The change is yours." She winked. ,,I wish you a peaceful night." And with those words, she got up and walked past the door, leaving the two men quiet. Just as fast as she appeared, she vanished into the darkness of the night. It was the strangest encounter in this town after 10 years.
Rayl looked at Elex. ,,What was she talking about? What a rude woman, spewing nonsense about our knights. I hope she leaves the town soon and does not spread it among the people."
Elex just stared at the glass, unable to speak, a single tear falling down his cheek.
On the chair she previously sat was a crumbled paper. Elex took it and could nont believe his eyes. It was a writing:
"One thing about tables is that they always turn".
