I gazed at the setting sun, my eyes unblinking as I sipped my coffee. The golden hues of the sky mirrored my contemplative mood. After a few moments, I decided it was time to move. I grabbed my blazer and carefully placed my coffee mug on the serving table trolley. Without a glance in the mirror, I made my way downstairs, my mind preoccupied.
As I descended, I noticed everyone present turning to look at me, their faces lighting up with smiles. The warmth in their expressions was palpable, though it felt somewhat alien to me then.
"Aagya veer beta tu," Dadi said, her voice filled with joy as she affectionately patted my cheeks. The happiness radiating from her was unmistakable, yet here I was, wishing the entire ordeal would end as swiftly as possible
("There you are Veer my boy")I responded with a noncommittal hum and cast my eyes around the room, taking in the familiar faces. I couldn't articulate the turmoil within me. It had been so long since I had left behind these emotions and attachments, and now, all of a sudden, I was being asked to embrace softness and affection for a woman I barely knew. The weight of their expectations pressed heavily on my shoulders, making me feel like an outsider in my own life.
"Let's go or we'll be late," Dad said to everyone in the room. With that, everyone rushed towards the exit gate.
"You know, I've heard that Bhabhi is so cool. She's a classical dancer too," Vanya exclaimed joyfully to Vihaan, and they both giggled.
"Hmm, I've also heard she's quite the responsible and mature one in her family," Vihaan said proudly to Vanya.
I lingered in the corner, eavesdropping on their conversation as they walked toward the car, bubbling with excitement. Their enthusiasm was a mystery to me.
Restless, I slid into the driver's seat and started the engine. The passenger seat beside me remained empty until Dadi came and sat there; she was the only one who dared.
As we drove to the restaurant, the car ride was thick with quiet anticipation. My family's excited chatter filled the air, a comforting hum, while I remained silent, lost in my thoughts. City lights blurred past the window, mirroring the whirlwind of emotions inside me.
We arrived at a cosy, upscale restaurant radiating warmth and sophistication. The valet took our car, and we stepped inside. The soft lighting and gentle murmur of conversations created an intimate atmosphere. My heart pounded as we were led to a private dining area where the family was already seated.
