Heart Sick

A little girl no older than seven sat under a tree in Meadow Park bawling her eyes out when a vanilla ice cream cone came into her vision of blurry tears.

She stared at the frizzy flaming red haired girl with freckles and braces, grinning at her with eyes like shining silver stars.

"Ice cream always makes me feel better when I'm upset," She said.

The girl took the ice cream.

"What's the matter?"

"My heart is very sick, I have heart disease," The girl replied. "The doctor says I'll be dead in a couple of days because it has gotten really bad."

"Wow, heavy stuff." She sat next to her. "Wish I could help you."

"You could."

"How?"

"By being there for me, I'm Rain."

"My name is Birdie."

Rain didn't die in a couple of days, she lived, and through it all, Birdie never left her side, not even for a second.

Around the age of fourteen, Birdie started looking at Rain in a whole new light. She found her heart skipping a beat every time Rain smiled and looked at her with those stunning emerald green eyes.

"Can I brush your hair?" She asked Rain, who sat in a chair looking out the window at the beautiful sunshine, the lovely green grass, the laughter of other children playing, and birds chirping.

"Sure, I'll never understand why you love to brush my hair so much, though," She replied, laughing and Birdie blushed at her laughter.

"Your hair is just so lovely."

Birdie loved to touch her soft gorgeous silver blond hair, she could play with her hair for hours and not get bored.

"Rain, can I tell you something?"

"Birdie, you know you can tell me anything."

"Promise you won't freak out or get mad at me?"

'Birdie, you're starting to scare me."

She took a deep breath. "Rain, I love you."

Rain turned around and smiled at her. "I love you, too, Birdie, you're my best friend."

Birdie shook her head, making her pigtails bounce. "No, Rain, I love you."

Rain's green eyes grew big with worry. "What are you saying?"

Birdie kissed her cheek. "I'm saying I'm in love with you."

Her cheeks turned scarlet. "Oh, Birdie." She played with her fingers. "Please, leave."

"You promised you wouldn't freak out."

"I need some time alone, please go," She said, kindly.

It didn't stop Birdie from running out the door crying.

Realizing how much she upset Birdie, she ran after her. "Birdie, wait!" She yelled. "Come back!"

She caught up to her and hugged her.

"You promised," Birdie wept.

"I'm sorry." She kissed Birdie on the lips, stealing Birdie's first real kiss and her own. "I love you too."

2 years later...

Birdie and Rain sat under the tree in the Meadow Park where they first met, eating vanilla ice cream.

Birdie grabbed Rain's hand. "Rain, you know I love you, right?"

Rain smiled. "Of course."

"I will always love you. You're the most beautiful women in the world to me and without you, I don't exist."

"Birdie, that's sweet-"

She cut her off with a kiss and looked into her eyes when their lips parted. "Whenever I look into your eyes I know I don't ever want to wake up one day and never see them again, I always want to wake up next you and be greeted with these eyes."

She pulled out a ring. "Marry me, Rain."

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" Rain shouted with joy, and Birdie slipped the ring onto her finger.

Rain hugged her. " I love you so much, Birdie."

"I love you, too, Rain."

4 years later...

They had a little backyard wedding and Birdie's uncle was a priest, so he married them.

"Rain, I vow to always love you no matter what, to live each moment as if it were our last, to treat you like a queen, and to cherish each and every waking moment with you."

"Birdie, I vow to never leave your side and I know that our love will triumph any obstacles we shall come across because our love is stronger than anything."

Their love overcame every obstacle that was in their way, except one. Rain's heart disease had gotten better over the years with her treatment but the treatment stopped working and the new one wasn't working all that well, she got very sick and fell ill on her deathbed.

Birdie couldn't stand seeing Rain's eyes look so dull, her skin so pale, and her gorgeous hair so limp and lifeless.

Rain smiled at her. "Don't be sad, baby, I'm happy."

"Why are you happy?"

"'Cause I lived a long happy life with you."

Birdie clenched her fist and turned away from her. "I'm not ready to lose you."

"I feel like I've wasted your time, knowing that I had this disease."

"Don't ever say that!" Birdie shouted and kissed her. "I don't regret anything."

"You gave me the love I needed that day when you gave me ice cream. Promise me you'll give your love to someone else when I'm gone?"

"No, I will not honor your request. I only love you."

"Well, at least promise me you'll live happily, even if I'm no longer by your side."

"I promise."

They kissed again.

"Lie with me, Birdie."

Birdie lied on Rain's deathbed, holding Rain in her arms and Rain passed away later that night in her arms, but Birdie swore she heard Rain's voice as if she was right next to her.

"I'll always love you, Birdie, forever and always."
