The smack of my head on the window jolted me from my sleep. I groaned and rubbed the now sore spot as sleep left my body and mind, trying to figure out what was going on. I was in a car, in the passenger seat, with my mom snickering next to me at the pain the window had inflicted on me. I turned to glare at her only to receive even more laughter. "Oh, you think my pain is funny, huh? Why don't you get hit in the head with glass and see how much you'll be laughing then." I crossed my arms and pouted.
"Sweetie, you know I'm just playing with you." She laughed and ruffled my hair. Her eyes had that weird sparkle in them they always had when she looked at me, something about me "lighting up her world" or some cheesy shit like that. But it always made me happy that she still had that sparkle. It seemed to have dimmed since my dad died, but it's gotten better.
Thinking of my dad suddenly made me frown a bit. He died two years ago in a car accident with a drunk driver. Neither my mom nor I have completely gotten over it. They were truly in love; some may even say soul mates. My dad and I were really close, I went to him about everything: school, bullies, and my friends. The fact that I'm gay. It was hard to tell him because I thought he would be disappointed, but he only hugged me tightly and told me how proud he was. I really miss him.
I looked back to my mom, she has gotten a lot better, she let her black hair grow out to her waist but now she had it in a messy bun to stay out of her dark, almost black eyes. She was a shorter woman, a few inches shorter than my 5'9", and looked nowhere near in her forties. At least I know I'll look just as youthful when I get older.
I sighed as I put my head against the headrest. The ride had been silent save for the classic rock music playing on the radio. It was our second day driving and we were almost to our destination. My mom and I used to live in Florida, just outside of Tampa. I liked it there for the most part. The weather wasn't horrific and the friends I had always found something to do. My mom just got a new job that had us moving up to New York. I was pretty excited until she said we were going to a nice small town rather than a big city. Probably someplace with less than a thousand people and everyone wanted to be your best friend. I wasn't impressed. I'm not upset that I'm leaving my old town, hell, I'm ecstatic, but couldn't it be somewhere cool with lots of shopping and things to do? What will there be? Forests? A small shopping mall and grocery store? Can't wait.
I could only sigh again and pout further. Mom seemed to have read my disinterest, "You'll like it there, I promise. I was able to get a nice house, its huge with lots of rooms and a pool. You'll even get your own bathroom, how cool is that? There's a big enough yard for us to get maybe a four-wheeler or something else, not to mention the woods behind the house have a trail to walk in." She smiled as she tried to convince me it wasn't bad. It doesn't sound bad, especially the part with my own bathroom. "Besides, you might even meet a cute boy to hang out with." She wiggled her eyebrow and nudged my arm.
"I'm not telling anyone." The sternness in my voice turned her smile off.
"What, why not? I'm sure they'll be accepting of it. I heard New York is a liberal state."
"You shouldn't generalize a state. I'm not telling anyone because I don't trust anyone. The last time I trusted people I didn't know with this it didn't end well, did it." I practically growled and immediately regretted it seeing the frown on my mom's face. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring it up." I said softly looking down and fiddling with my fingers. It was a touchy subject for both of us.
She wrapped her hand around mine making me look at her and her small smile. "Let's get past it. It's over and done with and I hope to god it never happens again." I nodded and kept quiet. "Why don't you go back to sleep, honey, we still have a few hours. I'll wake you went we get there." She squeezed the hand still on mine. I nodded, reclining my chair back and letting sleep take over me easily.
"Wake up Mikey, we're here." My mother's soothing voice brought me from a dreamless sleep. I felt her hand lightly shaking my shoulder. I rubbed my eyes to get the grogginess out of them before I looked at her with a sleepy smile and turned to the place I'll now be living.
I wasn't bad at all. It was much bigger than our last place that was squashed in the Floridian suburb. It looked Victorian, and while you could tell it was old, it had a facelift recently, probably from the last owners. It was quite big, I think Mom said it was like 1500 square feet or something, with tan siding and gray roofing. The front porch stretched around to the left side and a swing sat in front of the large window. There was a small garden that sat under the tan porch railing with plenty of bushes and colorful flowers. There were a few more trees and bushes that decorated the rest of the large front yard. The driveway was long and wide and led to a two-car garage on the side of the house. I could see a shed and the odd-shaped pool from the side, as well as the deep forest a way back. Definitely a big yard. I can't wait to take a dip in that pool; it didn't have a definite shape, just odd but it looked like it went deep considering there was a diving board on one side. The neighbors were far away as well giving us plenty of privacy. Not bad at all.
I got out of the car and started to walk to the door. There was a sign there from our realtor, 'Welcome Calla and Michael Varsy to Attica, New York (population 2394), now 2396 with you joining us' Okay, maybe more than a thousand people living here. 'We are all very glad you could join us in our little town, and we all bid you welcome.' I rolled my eyes at the note and took it off the door. You really shouldn't welcome someone on behalf of the entire town.
I opened the door and stepped inside. The inside was just as nice as the outside. All the floors were a chestnut color wood, and the walls were a light yellow that wasn't disgusting at all, surprisingly. The windows were big and let in plenty of light. Boxes and furniture littered the floor from the stuff we had shipped up here and had movers take care of. I walked further to find the kitchen. The aesthetic was a much cooler tone with gray cabinets and countertops. It was nice and the island in the center doubled as a bar with plenty of room to sit and eat. The kitchen led to the back porch. It was a nice grey-colored wood that stretched about 15 ft out and 25 ft wide. That led to the concrete that surrounded the inground pool I really like.
Back inside, I went up the wooden stairs that started at the entrance and turned down a long hallway with four doors. The first was a huge bathroom with both a shower and a claw foot tub. The one across it and next to it were both large bedrooms and lastly in the left corner was the master bedroom which put our old one to shame. I picked the next biggest room which was across from the master and fell in love. It was huge with a tall ceiling and a bend in one of the corners. There were two doors next to the entrance, one with a walk-in closet big enough to sleep in and the other with a smaller bathroom. Big enough for a shower, sink with a vanity, and toilet. Not big but perfect for me. Boxes with my name on them and my furniture were already in the room. I guess Mom knew I would pick this room, ever the psychic.
I started by moving my furniture to the desired position. My bed was against the wall under the bent ceiling and my dresser moved into the closet. It fits perfectly. I set up my bookshelf and desk on the opposite wall and my bedside table beside my bed. Once I was satisfied I started emptying the boxes. Halfway through my mom yelled for me to come down and help her with the bigger things and unpacking the kitchen.
After about three hours of unpacking, we still weren't done but it was better than when we got here. The couches and tv stand were set up and the kitchen was put together. We ran to the local grocery store to have food for the next few days before lounging on the couch with a pizza and streaming a movie on my laptop since the cable wasn't hooked up yet.
It was getting late so Mom kissed my forehead and I went up to bed. I stripped to my boxers and flopped on top of my covers, thinking about what tomorrow would bring. It would be my first day of school since Mom enrolled me a few days ago. It was super nerve-racking, going to a new school. I took a deep breath and pulled the cover on top of me and hoped no one would realize I was the random new kid. With that, I started my playlist and fell asleep to the sound of guitar riffs.
