The sound of shuffling feet and quiet chatter filled my ears as I stood perfectly still. The line ahead of me wasn't moving, and the woman in front of me at the counter was taking the longest time, staring up at the board with a blank expression. "Um, I'll have a... Wait, no, no." I groaned quietly. I had been in the same spot for ten minutes and I was sick of waiting.
After more waiting, the line finally moved. "Hello..." The small girl at the counter squeaked. I looked down at her and smiled. I wasn't very tall, but she looked fifteen and was around four foot eight. I felt like I had to squint to see her. I hesitated, thinking for a moment. "Just two black coffee's." She nodded frantically, hurrying to get the cups. "$8.95" She whispered, looking down. I handed her the money and picked up my coffee at the other window.
I felt bad for the girl, she was so short and I wasn't the most attractive person. I already knew that. I'm sure the tattoos didn't help, though. I sighed quietly and headed towards the door. I still felt bad for scaring her.
I didn't regret any of my tattoos, but it was hard for other people to talk to me sometimes.
My foot caught on a rug as I walked, making me stumble. I heard a small gasp as I fell slightly. Someone had been walking in front of me and I bumped into them, coffee spilling all over my shirt as the girl fell down on her ass. "Oh, crap. I'm sorry." I said, frowning. "It's fine..." I reached out a hand to help her up and she gladly took it.
She looked at my shirt, her eyes widening. I was covered in frappuccino. "I'm so sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going." I smiled and shook my head. "It's fine. Here, um, let me buy you another one." I pulled out my wallet and grabbed a ten. "What do you want?" I smiled. She hesitated, "You don't have to... I can buy it, it was my fault." She looked reluctant but after a minute, smiled and mumbled, "Fine." I nodded and got in line, with her trailing behind me. The line moved a lot faster than before and it didn't even take half as long as before. When we got to the counter, she stepped up and ordered. The same girl from before was there and when she saw me her eyes widened. I handed her the money and motioned for her to keep the change. She smiled at me while I walked over to the pick-up counter yet again. "Thank you." The girl smiled, moving her gaze to the floor. "Shit. Where are my manners? I'm Jeremy." I smiled at her. She looked up, puffing out her cheeks slightly. "Lex."
I smirked, "Are you in a rush, or would you like to sit and have coffee with me? I still feel kind of bad." I nervously scratched at the back of my neck. Lex smiled and nodded, making me breathe a small sigh of relief. I wasn't sure why I had asked and right after I had said it, I was almost certain she would turn me down, but she didn't.I followed her over to a table near the window of the shop. We sat down together, the silence consuming us for a couple seconds before I spoke up. "So do you live in Florida or are you just visiting?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. As she shifted in her seat, her brown hair swayed. "I live here, not too far. You?" She smiled softly. I nodded, "I've lived here most of my life, actually."
We sat there and talked for hours, watching as people would come and go. Everything she had to say was so interesting, I don't know what it was, but I loved the way she spoke. Lex seemed like an amazing person and I was happy that I got to talk to her, but eventually we both had to go.
She stood up and brushed herself off, smiling at me as she stepped away. "It was nice talking to you, but I have to leave." Her smile faltered a bit. "Yeah, it's late. Do you think we could meet up again sometime. I really enjoyed hanging out with you." She smiled again and nodded. I watched as she reached over for a napkin sitting on the table. She pulled out a pen and scribbled her number on it.
I took it from her, placing it in my pocket while we walked outside. "Call me sometime." I smiled and told her I would then she turned and walked away.I got home thirty minutes later to a dark house. I gazed into the pitch black windows as I pulled into the driveway. I yanked the keys out of the ignition and walked up to my front door. I slowly turned the knob, pushing it open with my hip as my keys jingled in my hand. I heard a small growl as I stepped inside. I reached over to turn the lights on, wincing as they illuminated my living room. Zenki jumped up from his bed and raced over to me, his little legs flailing behind him.
He followed me into the kitchen, trotting along on the hard wood floor. I set my keys down and walked over to the pantry. I looked over, making sure Zenki's food dish was still alright and that nothing had spilled.I slowly walked up the stairs, dragging my feet along the oak. It was only six, but I was exhausted. I peeled my jeans off as soon as I closed the door. I didn't have enough effort to put on a pair of sweatpants, so instead I flopped down on the bed as I was and watched as Zenki circled his spot on the bed. My eyes slowly closed as my breathing slowed down and I drifted off.
