Mery slowly opened her eyes as she regained consciousness to find herself in what she could make out to be a lab. She glanced around to see that she was laying on a operating table with a thin blanket over her. The lab was in a bit of a mess with red stains on the floor and a few stains on the table Mery was laying on. Mery groaned as her pounded and she tried to sit herself up, but she stopped when she heard a small canine growl in protest and a familiar voice behind her.
Riley: I advise not getting up from the table, as well as to not try to attack us or it'll be your demise.
Mery quickly turned her head to look at Riley, and Riley was somewhat taken aback to seeing the look of concern on Mery's face and the small hint of overwhelming joy in Mery's light blue eyes.
Mery: ( with concern: ) Riley...? Rosco...? This that really you? W-What happened to you? Both of you.
Riley: I think it's best that you do not know, as Mortimer wants you to rest.
Mery looked at Riley with confusion at how cold Riley sounded before she slowly sat up and looked at her surroundings.
Mery: W-Where are we?
Riley: We're in my lab.
Mery: N-No, that can't be. Your lab didn't look like this the last time I came here- A-At least I think it didn't look like this.
Riley gave Mery a confused yet curious look while Mery continued to look around the room with complete confusion and slight fear from how different the lab looked compared to her memories of it.
Riley: Do you know how long you've been trapped in that library?
Mery: Oh, I... No... A-A lot of it is a blur to me-
Mery's attention then went to the all to familiar book on the counter beside Riley.
Mery: So there it was!
Riley: ( confused: ) Huh?
Mery got up and walked to the counter where the book before Riley could tell her to stop and Rosco didn't growl at Mery, he only watched her calmly and quietly. Mery then chuckled to herself, her chuckle sounding as sweet as honey, and she gave Riley a nervous smile as she held up the book titled " All Styles of Knitting " which caused Riley to look at her with confusion.
Mery: I've been looking for this book for... ( Thinks to herself ) uh, strange, I can't seem to remember how long this old thing has been missing from my library. Anyway, I must've accidentally left it here when I last helped you and the kids with a experiment. ( Chuckles ) Clumsy me as always.
Riley looked at Mery with slight confusion by Mery's words, as she had never seen or heard about the scrapped Handeemen puppet until she discovered the book and the puppet's file the previous day.
Mery: ( to Riley: ) I'm surprised that you kept it here instead of returning it. ( Chuckles ) ( Jokingly: ) Did Nick talk you into trying to learn how to knit?
Riley quickly responded with a scoff, which caused Mery to chuckle in response, her confusion and slight worry about Riley and Rosco's change in appearance seeming to have disappeared for a moment.
Riley: Never. I also believe that the idea of a library being here is pointless, as we Handeemen puppets can barely r-
Mery: ( opens a random page on of the book with a smile, and reads it out loud calmly: ) " The bamboo stitch is an easy stitch that is ideal for men's apparel and garment such as scarves- "
Riley: Wait, wait, wait. ( To Mery, with a dumbfounded expression: ) You can read that book with-
Mery: Riley, there's no need to be rhyming anymore, there's no kids around. And yes, I can read, you act like- Wait a handee. ( To Riley, with a smile: ) Riley Ruckus, do you not know how to read?
Riley was speechless because, well yes She and some of the other Handeemen puppets are able to read a few small sentences phrases, but most of the time the Handeemen puppets were almost completely unable to read the human language. Mery took Riley's silence as Riley being embarrassed.
Mery: There's nothing to be embarrass about, Riley. But it does cause me to wonder if that the times you would visit the library to see if I had any new books at the science section was just you trying to keep me or the others from knowing about it.
Riley: . . . Mery, when was the last time you " saw me " at the library?
Mery thought for a moment as she closed the book, her expression turned into one of worry as she tried to recall how long it had it been she saw Riley or anyone, but it then went away when the memory of Riley coming suddenly in the library to tell her something.
Mery: I last saw you when you came into the library in unannounced, you even forgot to knock before entering. You told me that you wanted to talk to me about something important, and... Huh, I can't seem to remember what happened after I asked you what it was. ( To Riley, with a raised brow: ) What did you want to talk to me about anyway?
Riley thought to herself for a few minutes before she walked past Mery and Rosco, leaving Mery confused by her behavior.
Riley: Wait here for one moment. I need to inform the other that you are awake, so I apologize if I caused you to wait.
Riley then walked out of the lab, and closed the door behind her. Mery had a confused expression on her face as she stared at the close lab door.
Mery: Hmm. That girl is acting so peculiar. And what's with that gosh darn mask? It's... interesting to say the least.
Mery's attention then turned to Rosco as he sniffed her hair in curiosity, and she hesitantly gave him some gentle head pets as she didn't know if petting him would hurt him, but it didn't seem to as the large canine's tail started wagging in response to the head pets.
Mery: Oh, Rosco. I hope whatever happened to you didn't hurt. You look completely different than you did the last time I saw you. B-But don't worry, you're still the goodest and fluffiest boy I know. And the look, um, ( with a nervous smile: ) suits you?
Rosco just nuzzled his large head to Mery, asking for more pets, which she happily complied while trying her best not to worry too much about the change of appearance the scientist and canine duo at that moment as she rubbed it off as her mind trying to overwhelm her.
