High school AU, Academic Rivals

The class was tense as Mr Yami gave our test results. As he went to each student, pressing their paper against their tables, laughing at those who failed. Of course, I wouldn't fail. I'm not stupid. What was important was what Yuno got. Last Math exam, the bastard got the same score as me. I'm not going to let that happen this time. Mr Yami passed me my test paper, I didn't look at the score yet. He looked at me with a cigarette in his mouth, even though smoking was not allowed. "(Y/N), you got the second highest, pretty good." He said calmly. S-Second highest?! I eyed Yuno. No.. Please no. He got his paper and didn't show any emotion on his face. "Yuno.." Yami said.

Please, no. "You got the highest." He took out his cigarette. "Congrats." My grip on my paper tightened. You gotta be kidding me. Yuno glanced at me and said nothing. What an arsehole. Yami looked at his sheet of paper. "And, uh, Asta. You got the lowest." "HUH?!?!?"

I walked out of the classroom, today is shitty enough. I got 91/100 and I can't even be happy about it. He's gonna rub it in my face, but it will do subtly. So subtle, it's like a punch to the face. He was standing by my locker, talking to Klaus. Ugh, why must he be near my locker. I walked over there, my shoes hit the ground harder and harder. I can't help it. Sekke walked up to me. Oh no, not this guy.. "Hey, (Y/N). How's second place. Bah hah!" He chortled, running a hand through his brown-yellow hair. Of course, he would say something like this. I heard a sigh from Yuno "You got the second-lowest." Sekke grumbled and walked away, mumbling something along the lines of, "You don't have to say it out loud.." Did Yuno really say that? Him? Out of everyone?

I turn to him. "Uh, thanks?" I shrug. "You didn't do so bad yourself." I chuckle lightly to relieve the awkward atmosphere. "I know, I got the highest." He said with a pinch of pride in his tone. I groaned, rolling my eyes. "If you want, I can tutor you. It looks like you need it." He taunted, with no emotion. But, somehow he pisses me off effortlessly. "I don't need tutoring. Second highest is not that bad." I cross my arms, with a defensive tone. "Sure you don't." "Well, uh, next exam, I'll get higher than you." I crossed my arms and blurted out a comeback. "Sure." He walked off. I wish I could flip him off.

In your dorm room.

I was at my table, clicking my pen in sync with the annoying ticking of the clock. I stared at the homework. Advanced homework that Yuno and I got. It felt like the work was taunting me. I took a deep sigh and looked at my test paper I received today, staring at the '91/100' written in red ink. Fuck this shit.

...

I knock twice on his door. When it opened, I saw Yuno standing behind with a hand on the wall. He waited for me to say something. "Uh, I need help." I showed him the homework. He looked at me for a moment and then gave me space to come in. His room was organised, everything set in place perfectly. My room was a mess. I mean, I can't waste time on organising my shit. I had to study. "So, you finally realised you need help?" He scoffed. "Oh come on, it was just a blip. At least admit I am smart."

He sighed. "Yeah, you are pretty.. smart. At least enough to be my rival."

"And?" I expected more, I crossed my arms.

"You didn't do so bad on the test."
