" Ms. Porter?" The nurse called from the back door. I got up and walked towards her.
" This way" she led me room #4. I sat down on the exam table.
" How are you today? you look like you about to pop"
shaking my head with a sigh " I'm fair, had took take two buses to get here today, and it's hot out" I always came to the same free clinic every other week. The nurses here weren't judgmental and always caring. Besides, being 16 and pregnant, I didn't have much money to afford an appointment at the other doctors' offices nor the health insurance.
" Now Daira, I hope you're staying hydrated in this heat, you know Virginia weather can get a bit crazy, but once it's hot, it's hot. plus you being 8 months pregnant you know-"
" I know, gotta stay hydrated!"
She smiled " good, let's get you laid back, lift up your shirt for me. I'm going to do your ultrasound. you won't see Doctor Herbert until your next visit"
Shook my head in agreement.
" Looks like baby boy is still developing fine, you're doing great for your circumstances. how's school?"
As you can tell me, and Ms. mays always talked in detail when I came in for an appointment. Coming here was like a getaway from my dark world, IF I could come here every day I would.
" School is school, the kids are the same, teachers are the same, I'm just hoping I can make it to my junior year, with everything going on."
" it's going to be tough but remember I gave you some contacts that wouldn't mind helping you, how's your - mom?" she turned and looked at me before asking...
" Same ole same ole, like the wind, don't know if she coming or going" I closed my eyes as she wiped the cold gel off my stomach.
" I understand" Ms. Mays said sitting me up. She handed me a new pack of pre-natal vitamins, " make sure you're taking these and what else Daira?"
" Stay hydrated! I know, I know" I got off the table and gave her a hug. " Two weeks and then you'll see Doctor Herbert, don't forget Daira!!"
"Thank you, Ms. Mays".
Flashback to present day: Desville Police Station
" And you said you haven't seen her since last Tuesday " The detective walked around the table and sat the chair in front of me and my brother.
" We said that the first time, why you keep asking the same question man?" Micah rolled his eyes. Micah was my twin brother and like my best friend. Ever since we were born, we've been Un separatable. He always looked out for me Kyla, our 8-year-old sister. Micah was like the man of the house. Whenever out mother would bring her drug-habit boyfriends in out the house, Micah always made sure we're close by. When I found out I was pregnant he was the first person I told. He's been by my side ever since.
" so, you mean to tell me that YOUR mother, Ms. Porter, left a two 16 years and 8-year-old, in a house alone for 7 days."
" Sir, WE filed the missing person report, you think we did something to her?" I kept my head down while Micah talked. Momma always went on her spells of leaving us in the house alone. Sometimes 3 days sometimes 4. But she always came in and out just never staying at the house. Most of the time she did this when she was tricking to buy coke or pay our light bill. But she never went this long. As much as we hated her, we were concerned that something bad had happened to her.
