❝ Nobody's son, nobody's daughter ❞present day
AmayaLife had throw some of the toughest battles my way, and I had handled them brilliantly, but when Rigel Wilde walked into that classroom, I knew I would lose this battle. I didn't know if it was the way he looked at me, or his alluring features, or the hope that he might change, even though he had practically squashed those hopes with his sharp comment about my adoption, but I could feel myself being pulled towards him. Even if I tried to escape, he would always find his way back to me, and not in a 'cute rom-com' kind of way. In an aggravating, 'please leave me alone' kind of way.
I distracted myself for the remainder of my classes, just wanting to go home and forget about everything that had happened today. The last thing I wanted was to have my head in the clouds while having dinner with the neighbours.
Billie walked up to me in the hallway after our last lesson, a worried look on her face, "Are you okay, Amaya? You've been awfully quiet since lunch." The redhead girl asked softly as I turned to look at her. Had I really been that obvious? I shook my head, "I'm fine. Just tired." As I spoke, the last person I wanted to see, and the rest why I was apparently so quiet, walked past us in the hallway, looking me up and down with the most unreadable expression.
The girl beside me noticed the minimal interaction, looking back at me with wide eyes. "Do you two know each other? He seemed like he recognised you when he rushed into our first class." I had come to notice that Billie was, indeed, a very observant person. The only thing I could so was nod at the girls question.
"So do you two have a history or something? The way he looked at you was... flirty." I couldn't help the scoff that left my lips. Rigel Wilde would never be caught being flirty towards anyone, let alone me. I don't even think he was even capable of being anything other than arrogant and rude.
And sometimes extremely infuriating.
"No, we don't have any history. Apart from the fact that we practically grew up together at the orphanage. But he despises me and I despise him, so I highly doubt he was looking at me in a flirty way." Billie nodded her head, absorbing everything I said. Talking about my past was something I didn't like doing, especially with people I hardly knew, but I felt like I could trust Billie; she was nice.
Once I had bid goodbye to the girl, I made my way over to the Milligan's car, where Norman was waiting for me. "Hi, Norman." I greeted him as I got into the passenger seat of the car, and the man turned to look at me with a smile. "Hello, Amaya. How was your first day?" He questioned as the car pulled away from the school, back into the suburbs of the town. I blinked aimlessly at the mans question, before remembering that I had to answer it.
"It was good." My vocabulary seemed to have become minimal in that moment, and I nodded as I spoke, still questioning everything that had happened today. Rigel Wilde had reappeared in my life when I thought I would never have to see him again, he then proceeded to call me broken and hopeless, and then I told him to go fuck himself.
Quite eventful if you ask me.
Norman didn't push a further, for which I was thankful for, and in no time at all, we were pulling up to the Milligan's home; my home. I quickly hopped out of the car, making my way inside to greet Anna, who I found in the kitchen. The blonde woman whipped around with a bright smile when she saw me, pulling me into a welcoming hug. "Hello, dear. How was your day?" The woman asked as she went back to her cooking.
"It was nice. Do you need help with anything?" I noticed how she seemed to be bustling around the kitchen with three pots on the stove and lots of ingredients scattered across the counter tops, almost like she was making a three course meal at a Michelin star restaurant. Anna waved me away, not looking away from the food. "No that's alright dear. Why don't you go get changed, the neighbours should be here soon."
I took that as my cue to go upstairs and freshen up before dinner. Discarding my uniform on my bed, I stepped into the bathroom to take a quick shower, before changing into a long skirt and a t-shirt. It always made me sad that I would never have the experience of my mother passing me down her clothes, since everything had been burnt to ashes in the fire. To this day, I could still see my mother wearing a long red sundress, that I had always adored, and that one day I had hoped would have been passed down to me.
The doorbell ringing downstairs pulled me out of my thoughts, "Amaya, can you get the door please?" Anna called from the kitchen, and I quickly skipped downstairs to get the door. A young couple, both with dark brown hair stood at the door, warm smiles on their faces. I opened the door wider for them to come inside, "Hi, you must be the Cuttermills, please come in."
"And you must be Amaya. It's lovely to meet you. I'm Natalie, and this is my husband Raymond. Oh and this is Rigel." I became immobile as the young woman spoke, the couple walking in before I came face to face with none other than the tall, dark haired boy that pissed me off more than anything. He smiled politely at me as he walked in, and all I wanted to do was wipe that smile off his face.
Anna and Norman walked over to the couple, directing them into the kitchen to have some drinks, while I remained frozen in the hallway, with Rigel standing next to me. "Amaya-" Before he could get another word out, I walked straight past him, not giving him the time of day. I wasn't usually like this. It was rude of me to just ignore him, but after what he said to me, I couldn't even look at him.
