Aspen Darling absolutely despises surprises.

As a girl who could predict almost everything, she hated unpredictably, even a balloon popping could send her flying a foot in the air, heart racing and palms sweating.

In her life, surprises had always been bad. The surprise that she had been born with the gift of foresight, cursing her with the tragedy of knowing all the bad she would ever seen. The second surprise she was cursed with was that Fenrir Greyback had been spotted in their little town of  Laugharne (yes, that one place dylan thomas mentioned, get over it!) and that multiple people had been attacked.

The third surprise was when she found her brother's corpse, his once snow white pressed shirt blooming a dark crimson, a myriad of slashes marring his beautiful face that was a copy of her own.

So yeah, Aspen Darling hated surprises, especially pranks.

How could she fall in love with two things she hated? a werewolf and a prankster?

pale rays of light tiptoed
across the waters; and by and by
there was to be heard a sound at
once the most musical and
the most melancholy in the world:
the mermaids calling to the moon.
