It had been eleven weeks since Bucky died. But really it had been 66 years. They should be old and gray, watching their grandkids play and talking about the past. But Ella's a widow, 10 weeks pregnant witcher late husband's baby, and adjusting to the 2010s the best she knows how to. It hasn't been easy for the young Widow.
“Happy anniversary, Buck,” Ella muttered, looking at the painting of her late husband on the wall of her Brooklyn apartment. It would have been their 72nd wedding anniversary. She had a room at Avengers Tower, but Brooklyn was her home, the apartment she now lived in wasn't that far from where she and Bucky had lived. It was an Orthodox community, most people around there only spoke Yiddish, and Ella had picked up on it fast having spent a lot of time with the Barnes family growing up. Ella had been the only Catholic in the community, but really she was almost more Jewish than Catholic.
Neither Ella or Bucky had been that religious, thinking back on it now Bucky was more Reform than Orthodox, Bucky didn't keep kosher, really only did on Shabbat when they would have dinner with his family and Ella only sent to Mass on Sunday, unlike her mother who had gone everyday after work without fail until she started to get sick.
Ella needed to be in Brooklyn that day specifically, it was the first anniversary without waking up to burnt pancakes and poor man's cookies, she wouldn't be waking up with Bucky in the kitchen wearing her apron and a pair of boxers, somehow looking adorable and sexy all at the same time. God she loved that man so much.
It wasn't fair that he had to be taken so soon, they had a whole life ahead of them. The war was so close to being over, they could have gone back to New York, Ella would have gone back to working at the Kosher shop owned by the Barnes family (that was still in business and owned by Ella and Bucky's niece, Maris Proctor) and Bucky could have gone back to working at the docks.
They weren't rich back then by any means, but they always got the bills paid on time (they actually lived in one of the apartments above the store so they didn't have to pay rent) and always had food on the table and with our having to buy medicine for Ella, they could have afforded to have a baby. Another tear ran down Ella's face at the thought of it, they could have had a family and not have to worry about the bills. Winnie and George would have been amazing Grandparents, Rikki, Eliza and Naomi would have been wonderful aunts. It made Ella sick thinking about how her baby won't get to know any of her family except a few distant cousins.
Bucky always got her a new Mitpachat for their anniversary, he said she didn't have to wear one when they first got married, but Ella liked to, not only did it show Bucky that she respected his religion, but it was also just practical really, it kept her hair out of her face which was very nice during the war. after she convinced him that she liked wearing them, he made sure to get her one to go with all her outfits. Ella only wore the one she was wearing when she went into the ice now, the rest had been beautifully preserved by Rikki, but Ella couldn't wear them, they reminded her too much of her Bucky. Ella only had three Mitapachats now, the one she wore everyday, the one she wore to galas and fancy places and the one she wore for missions. Ella was going to get more soon, but the thought of getting one scared her, all of the ones she got were gifts, either from their wedding or from Bucky.
Ella placed her hand on her stomach, 10 weeks pregnant and a widow, her mother had been six months along with her when her dad was killed in world war one, the stress of losing him had sent her into premature labor. Ella wished her mother was alive, hell she wished she had a parental figure to curl up into and cry her heart out to because fuck, she missed Bucky so much. She missed everyone so much. Ella just wanted to go home.
