           Winter is finally over. Spring is peeking through the snow. The river is melting and is now flowing. My father's business is soon going to be open again. My father, Mr. Bernard, is a fur trading merchant. All the winter the work men have been hunting animals. Now my father is ready to sell and make much money. I'm to go to the market in a few days.

           Our settlement is a small new town in the new state of Illinois called Kaskaskia. We are French settlers who chose to come here for a better life. The towns people own no slaves. My father and I live outside of town, but my father only hires French towns people. We have much room on our plantation to house all of the workers. My father and I live in the main building. My quarters
