Guests of Honour

The children were buzzing: today was finally the day their dream to meet their gloved hero and see him perform live on stage would come true. They had been made guests of honour by Michael Jackson himself and I was lucky enough to be supervising them on that very special day.

I worked as a Play Leader at the children's hospital and Michael had come to visit a month ago. Unfortunately I wasn't on duty that day but the prospect of going to see him at his best in concert crushed any feeling of resentment to my other colleagues, who were extremely jealous of my privileged position.

We arrived without any problems and amongst the utter turmoil of fans we were all escorted by a group of security to a special seating area, complete with snacks, drinks and the optimum view of the stage. The children were having a blast and the concert hadn't even started!

All of a sudden, the music began and my heart fluttered as among his brothers, there was Michael Jackson giving it his all.

When I wasn't riveted to his beautiful vocals and talented dance skills, I kept an eye on the children who were staring in awe.

Seeing their smiling faces reminded me of how much I loved my job, it wasn't well paid but I had enough to get by and giving these sick children a way to enjoy themselves was beyond any wage I could ever ask for.

After the spectacular show the security invited us to meet Michael, saying "he's very excited to meet you all". That gave the children something to be happy about, it was so nice for them to get the special treatment for once in a while, it seemed so unfair to keep them all cooped up.

But I did feel slightly anxious the whole time whenever we went out with the children, I was constantly worried that something would happen, I was determined to keep them from harm in ever way, even if my colleagues insisted I was being a little over the top.

They didn't understand me though, they didn't understand what the risks were. It was for that reason I was sure that I was chosen to take the children out. The boss trusted me and the children trusted me, including their parents, that was all I cared about.

On our way backstage I felt a tug on my shirt.

"Maria, what if Michael Jackson doesn't like me?"

I looked down at little Destiny, who had suffered a bad bait of meningitis so constantly worried about her scars.

I smiled.
"He will absolutely adore you, I promise".
