Sweet and kind my mom can be. Yet sometimes she can seem so mean. She makes me lunch and ties my shoe. But when she says no to me I get the blues. I fuss and fight or sometimes get sad. Why couldn't mommy just do what I asked. Hopefully one day she will see. Just how much her saying no means to me.
I jump outta bed and rush to the kitchen.
There mama stands, pancakes and syrup is whats being given. She makes them the best, fluffy, soft, and sweet. If only I could put chocolate chips on top and have a real breakfast treat. I stare for a few seconds, as she lays them on my plate. As she grabs the syrup and fork for me, I do not hesitate. I do a little dance in my seat and wiggle my toes. Excitingly I asked for some chocolate chips on top, but mommy says no. Softly she sits some fruit down on my plate. I hurry and eat so that I won't be late. I rush to the car, ready for school. I buckle my seatbelt, mom locking the door. I spot my favorite toy lying on the car floor. Mom walks to the car, gets in and sighs. She looks so tired but still in the mirror, she sees me and smiles.
"Are you ready to be great?" She asks me as she starts the car.
I know that I am but with my lucky toy I bet I'll feel like a star.
I excitedly say yes, looking out of the window. I asked,
"Can my ultra cool special toy come with me to school? With my lucky toy by my side I know I'll rule"
Mom turns to look at me and my toy, tilts her head and says to me, "I'm sorry, but no."
I whine a little and she says not to cry. I make pouty faces. I'm mad now, Mom says, but one day I'll see why. School is to learn and toys are for playtime. My toy will be there when I come back home, I'll be more than fine.
Hugs and kisses at the class door, I tell mommy I love her and she grabs my cheeks to tell me that she loves me more.I run into class, I'm ready to learn. I greet my teacher and here comes the fun. We do arts and crafts and check on our plants. I write in cursive and laugh with my friends. We complete our morning lesson, and stickers, I receive. For being a good student and staying in my seat. For staying so quiet and writing so neat. For stepping in when others at my table needed help. But my friend Maria can't control herself. She's been talking all morning, dancing around the room. The teacher asks her to behave 100 times. She doesn't know what else to do.
She held Maria's hands and asked her,
"Young lady, what is going on with you?"
Jumping with excitement, Maria pulls away and shouts.
"I snuck some Hershey's Kisser's from the candy bowl at Titis house!"
Ms. Rosy laughs and says, "Your sugar levels are high but your body's so small. Well that would explain why you're bouncing off the walls.""...You can sit with me today, at least until you've calmed down. Oh no, there's even chocolate all over your blouse."
"I'm fine!" Maria shouts, huffing and puffing.
Ms. Rosy warns Maria that she'll call her parents, and that she's not bluffing.
In that moment it became so clear to me. I asked Mommy for chocolate chips on my pancakes at breakfast because I wanted a little treat. With syrup, already so messy yet so tasty, so sweet. Mommy didn't add chocolate chips because she was protecting me. My health is important and too much sugar will make me crash and burn. I need to focus and that won't help me learn. I'll get anxious and tired and may need a nap, if I ate so much sugar SO early in the morning like that.At lunchtime Jacoby is flaunting his newest toy. A remote control car, moving fast making noise. Everyone gathers, little kids shout. Eager for a turn, to see what it's all about. It looks cool and goes fast with flames painted on the hood. It makes me wish I had my lucky toy. This doesn't feel good. Mommy said it's best to control myself and my thoughts, so I don't cry. I just sit from afar, sip my apple juice and sigh.
It's time for P.E.
My favorite part of the day. It's where we let loose, we can dance, skip, and play.
Jacoby walks over and goes, "Check out my ride! I saw you wishing you had one, sitting alone to the side. It's got shiny rims and shiny paint, and even the light on it works."
Gosh, how I wish he'd stop being a jerk.
I shout,"I don't care about your fancy little car or its remote! I have my own toys waiting for me at home."
He laughs loudly and teases me, quickly running off.
I wish I had my lucky toy so I can feel like a star. I go play football with some friends to forget about Jacoby and his toy car.
Time to head back to class, almost time to go home. Students rush to line up by the gymnasium door. Kicking and screaming their way to the line, two little girls fall at the same time. I heard a loud screech, it was nearly a cry. I look over, tears pouring from Jacoby's eyes. The little girls fell on top of Jacoby's shiny new ride. Jacoby gets angry and tosses the remote. Not realizing this isn't the carpet he has in his home. The remote falls apart and his new car is crushed. If someone ruined my things, my world would be destroyed. I'd be so upset if someone broke my lucky toy. Maybe that's what mommy is trying to avoid.I rush to the car, arms wide open. Mommy hugs and kisses me, dad holding the door, loving words are spoken. Like, "How was my day? Did I learn anything new?"
I just smile, respond and say
"Yes, like why you tell me the things you do."
Mommy giggles a bit and kisses my hands.
We get in the car, unbroken and still in one piece. There, my lucky toy is placed neatly onto my seat. I grabbed it up quickly, overjoyed and relieved.I now understand why mommy says no to me.
