Words were inadequate to comprehend the situation. Was it karma? Was it her ill fate? She looked in the mirror, unable to fathom her grim position. Less than three hours ago, she was bustling with her notes, binders, and index cards, trying to remember every formula her eyes landed on. Now she was wearing a hand-me-down white dress that once belonged to Aria Clyde, grandmother of Asteria. Tears were flowing. Her mother sat in the corner, too stunned to speak. Eva was afraid to look into her daughter's eyes, begging her to save her from this grave danger.
The room was too quiet, it felt as if they were mourning for someone. Maybe they were. The only sound she could hear was her heart thumping hard. Her sister-in-law, Rose, pulled her wavy mane into an elegant knot. She was surprised at how her hair obeyed. Rose placed the beautiful white roses into her hair, which looked like an esthetic barrette. Her hands quivered while she put the veil over Asteria. Rose looked at her through the mirror and gave her a dull, sad smile. Asteria couldn't return the smile. Her cheeks felt numb. Everyone left the room quietly. She looked at herself. Did she even think she would get married at the point of the gun? Where was love? Where were the lengthy, cheesy poems?

Her eyes swiftly looked at the clock. It was 9:30 AM. She would be called at any moment now for the lab practical exam. She was not worried about the theory. But given her high misfortune, she would get the toughest experiment. It was inevitable. She just prayed she would be able to show the desired output.

"Number 9, please bring your lab notebook," the assistant professor called out. Asteria stood at once and looked at her best friend, Bethsheba. Beth looked at her with an encouraging smile and yelled, "All the best, baby." She returned her contagious smile and strode quickly to the lab.

Sweating profusely, she started her assigned experiment. Once she completed the exam, she had to attend her cousin's marriage. Everyone thought she intentionally made an excuse to avoid attending the family gathering. Maybe she did, but her father would kill her if she gave a slip today. She sighed and shook her head. She would worry about this after the exam. Ignoring the inner voices, her hands skillfully arranged the circuit.

Seth, a bodyguard, and an extremely good friend, drove home at the speed of light. He gave a gentle bow when Asteria exited the car and bid a quick goodbye. She rushed into the home and dressed in the long, lilac, flowy gown her mom bought.

She felt overdressed and exposed. If her mom had bought this, she would have discussed it with her cousins and their mothers. Her boobs threatened to bounce out. She cussed her body, imagining how good this dress would be if she were a bit skinnier. She midparted her hair and plaited it halfway on either side. Then she tried to cover her cleavage with her hair. She sighed and called Seth, they had to rush so she shouldn't have to miss the wedding.

When she stepped out of the main doors and walked towards the car, Seth automatically opened the door for her, but he stared at her with a shocked look on his face.

"Oh my God," he said, still staring at her.

Seth was a good-looking man with dark olive lustrous skin. His intense stare made Asteria blush.

"Er... Thanks, Seth."

"Nah girl, you look like a new person, is it you, Ria?" He said it with an astonishing look on his face.

Asteria chuckled, relieving some tension as she climbed into the car, unaware of the looming, dreadful fate at her destination.
