As the morning sun painted golden streaks across the verandah, the Srivastava haveli came alive with a quiet excitement. Today was no ordinary day—it marked the inauguration of the Bangaon Village Library, a dream Hariday had nurtured through sweat and sleepless nights. Villagers bustled with anticipation, elders murmured blessings, and garlands hung from every archway of the ancestral mansion.

Descending the staircase with Hariday, Sanjay adjusted the collar of his ivory kurta, his mind still clouded by the lingering awkwardness that had taken root between him and Suhnai

Descending the staircase with Hariday, Sanjay adjusted the collar of his ivory kurta, his mind still clouded by the lingering awkwardness that had taken root between him and Suhnai. Days had passed since her confession—words that should have brought clarity, but instead left behind an uneasy silence. Though she behaved as if nothing had changed, the lack of warmth in their once-easy camaraderie gnawed at him.

As they entered the dining room, Sanjay's gaze froze mid-step.

Seated at the breakfast table was a tall, effortlessly charming man, dressed in a fitted Nehru jacket over a pale blue kurta. His frame was lean but strong, posture relaxed yet commanding. And seated across from him—laughing, radiant, alive—was Suhnai.

Sanjay's stomach clenched.

Her eyes sparkled as she teased the man, her tone lilting with familiarity. Not once had she looked that carefree with him since the day she spoke her heart. He watched as the stranger leaned closer, offering a smirk that made Suhnai giggle. Giggle. A sound Sanjay hadn't heard from her in weeks.

"Wow, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas! And Singapore too?" Hariday said, sliding into his seat with the ease of a host delighted by good company. "That's quite the resume, Arvind. So, you and Suhnai go way back?"

The man—Arvind—smirked as he tore into a piece of buttered toast. "Quite the story, actually. We studied right here in Bangaon. And Suhnai, well..." He tilted his head, gaze lingering on her. "She was my savior during every exam season. Maths, law prep, even English literature—I'd have failed half my life if it weren't for her."

Sanjay's spoon paused midway to his mouth. Savior? Seriously?

Suhnai chuckled, brushing a wisp of hair from her face. "He's exaggerating. Arvind always found new ways to get into trouble. I just made sure he didn't drag me down with him."

"Remember the chapati fire?" Arvansh grinned. "I nearly set the kitchen on fire, and she came sprinting in with a fire extinguisher. Like a superhero in chappals."

Sanjay blinked. A fire? In whose kitchen? When? She never told me. His eyes narrowed, jealousy threading through his veins like poison. What else don't I know?

Hariday laughed heartily. "Arvind, you're a riot. But now look at you! Top-tier firm, traveling abroad, a legal eagle in the making. Suhnai, you must be proud of your friend."

"I am," she replied softly, looking at Arvind with a fondness that made Sanjay feel like an intruder. "He's come a long way."

Arvind leaned back, his tone shifting, warming. "Actually, we prepared for CAM together. Those late nights, the mock interviews, the case law reviews—we did all of it side by side."
